This may be a daft question, but here goes. My 98 E300td has an uneven tick over. I have changed all the filters and it purrs nicely at constant speed and running much better but still have the lumpy idle. I have now noticed it is now more raspy under load, and on closer inspection have found the clamp that holds the exhaust onto the turbo has a small blow. I am guessing this is the raspy rattle noise under load. :dk: As the system requires all seals etc to be tight would this also be the cause for it being lumpy when at idle, and the reason for the little pause/cough when pulling away.

Try to tighten the clamp to make it sealed properly.
About the odd idle I would look at bubbles in the lines first.
Or a bad SOV oring, letting air in too.

Hi Olivier, Many thanks for your reply. I will be looking at clamp tomorrow and hoping this is the rasping noise under pressure as it blows out from clamp. When I changed the fuel filter there were two small O rings in a little packet that I could find no reason for. Are one of these for the SOV.

Clamp now tightened, and made little difference. Checked if there were bubbles in fuel lines and they were all fine. Turns out that although I had cleaned the MAF it is in fact faulty. Disconnected and took it for a run, only to find that it ran fantastically. No cough or hesitation when pulling away and no billow of smoke when pulling off. Can anyone recommend a good cheap supplier of MAF's for a 98 E300TD? next job to exchange the black water type solution that is in the engine for some new oil. It's a little worrying when the oil trickles off the dip stick.

Suspect a blocked cat for the exhaust blow, but first loosen the clamp, jiggle the exhaust a bit and then tighten the clamp, there is no seal just a taper fit joint.

The blow was due to the clamp being loose and after a few good turns with the ratchet now sorted :thumb: Just need to find a reasonably priced replacement MAF now :)

Try ECP for the maf aswell, just get the O E unit from them usually Peirburg or Bosch

Call ECP & speak to some one to check it the correct 1 online

They all worked on my old E...
To each is own tho.
I also used VW maf as well, a lot cheaper and giving more boost, more oomph. But hey, the afficianatos like to be like they are told, "on the norm" I am not ;)
The one I have might not be perfect but they work, the rest is only how much do you want to spend, can afford to spend, like to spend. That's all.
