Bonding with my CLS 55

Great you live your cls55amg! I have just bought one too. Is there any problems with the car that I should look out for??

one more tour :D

this was an 11 day jaunt to Norway, its fjords and its Atlantic coast.

Again, the CLS55 impressed with its ability .. the stunning sweeping near empty Norweigian roads were perfect for the thrust of the V8K pushing the CLS up hills as if going down them.

this time, the CLS55 was hassling all sorts of cars (Ferrari 550, Vantage V8 Roadster, Audi R8 GT (chap only had his car a few weeks so was not driving it to anywhere near its abilities), being left in the hairpin corners by some (KTM X Bow, BMW 1M) and keeping up with others (Audi R10 V10 facelift, Vantage V12).

some of the roads were truly bumpy, and this is where the CLS excelled. Airmatic was utterly amazing at keeping the wheels on the road, while the sportier cars were being thrown off course as I ran away from them.

the only part where I seriously suffered was hairpins down hill and to a lesser extent hairpins up hill .. turning a near 2 tonne car 180 degrees with lots of braking is not its forte, but hey, the CLS held its head high.

Norway is the most eye wateringly expensive place I have ever been to. But what utterly incredible nature. Water, water and waterfalls absoutely everywhere. And the freshest air I have ever breathed. In the fjords, the light was so clear and so pollution free, it was like super HD. Breathtaking country.

and more tunnels than probably anywhere else in the world ... great for listening to the V8K.

total mileage from home to Norway to home in 11 days:

the dash back from Aalborg (Northern Denmark) to home in 1 day; leaving Aalborg hotel at 730am UK time, going via Germany (this increased the average speed somewhat!), the Netherlands, Belgium and France onto Dunkirk ferry and home by 1030pm the same day (I was tired but completely ache free, a testament to the CLS's continent crushing abilities):

Hello glad you like your cls 55 AMG! I have just bought one on a 55 plate..... Wow what a car! I still need to bond with the car fully in a good long ass road trip! Are there any problems with the car that I should know about?

another year, and I still love it. No long drives this year as it was the GT3's turn.

today in sunny Suffolk

It's a great feeling and makes it so much more than "it's just a car" doesn't it? :thumb:

I have never kept any car this long nor driven any car this far, 4.5 years and 40,000 miles.

It remains a thrill even now, especially blasting past a few cars at a time in the flat lands of East Anglia.

What does, a sunny day in Suffolk, or taking the GT3 for the long drives?

All 3 :D

paintwork (except for bonnet and front bumper stone chips) in surprisingly good condition bearing in mind I hardly ever clean it.

Last time it was waxed/sealed was about 4.5 years ago!

Mini Overhaul on Saturday 23 May 15. First time in years that I have had to spend real money on the CLS.

Something about ‘5’s and a CLS55 :D

After a tough 2000 mile hoon to Scotland with the Petrolhead Nirvana folks recently, the CLS needed some TLC and replacement parts.
IMG_1061_zpspqp9vfpy.jpg

The following were replaced with MB parts:
1. Front lower ball joints – slight play

2. Front discs and pads – non MB discs and pads (but Pagid) I previously fitted were kaput and I never felt that they were as good as they should be. New discs had W221 part number and pads looked completely different from the Pagid ones. After 300 miles, MB discs and pads feel right, but that’s probably also because they are new.

3. Engine air filters – cheaper than I expected, car seems to be breathe better and feels more responsive (again, placebo effect perhaps)

4. Off side camshaft gasket and breather seal. Just look at the state of the bits after 55k miles.

5. Brake fluid – this took a while to bleed and refill

6. Near side fog lamp – damaged by stones in Scotland. You can’t just replace the glass, you have to replace the whole unit. Last time I was in Scotland, the exact same thing happened.

7. Rear differential oil – only fluid that has not been changed since I got the car over 5 years ago.

The sunroof runners and seals were cleaned and lubricated. The dust and small dust particles from poorly surfaced roads in Scotland made it rough.

I also fitted 4 new Michelin Pilot Sport 3 MO1 tyres and had the alignment front and back done. So far, after 300 miles, it’s a lot quieter than the Conti SportContact 3s. Rides a lot better too, but then the Contis were very dead, even if there was around 3mm left on the fronts (after 25k miles!), and rears were still legal (after 15k miles).

CLS now fit for many more miles.

What a car !!

Simon,
Great thread. Lovely car. Great colour. Prefer the mk1 like yours, mk2 seems to have lost the je ne sais quoi aesthestically.

Amazing read thankyou , I collect my new
Cls55 in a few weeks , black with black .
I was really impressed with it in the test
drive it felt really well put together .
I would like more info on the European trips .
