Some scrote has yanked the bonnet star off my car overnight. Nasty malicious and pointless thing to do, felt like a real personal affront.

The housing doesn't seem to be damaged as far as i can tell - presumably it's designed so it is fairly easily removable for safety reasons, though the link below seems to suggest replacing the whole emblem rather than just the star. Is this really quite an idiot-proof DIY fix or should I wait until service time in a couple of months?

I'm not in favour of violence but on this occasion can you not connect the bonnet star to the mains.

This is one of the reasons why iv'e fitted a flat emblem.

It's an easy job. I lost mine on my old E500 estate, the usual scrotes I'm sure. I had the idea that nicking bonnet stars etc was quite recent, but an elderly German who chatted to me as I was cleaning the star on my W124 said that he had been in Latin America in the 50s and the local youths had nicked his star back then!

Hi Bigsilverestate. Just to let you know, changing the star is very easy. Did mine last year using just a pair of long nose pliers. Took about 15 mins. Just be sure you pay the extra and get a genuine Merc one. I went the cheap way, (Pattern Part £15.00) and it's starting to show signs of pitting after only 6 months.

It is very easy to change.
I've lost three of these over several years.
All part of the joys of MB ownership.

Interestingly when I was last in Lisbon I noticed a lot of MBs with holes where the star should be. Asked one taxi driver about it and he said kids love taking them and no-one bothers to replace them. Sad world,...

Thanks chaps - anyone know somewhere I can get a genuine replacement by mail order? MB Dartford won't ship parts to retail customers and I'd rather not have to go down there.

Thanks I'll give them a call
