Long story cut short.

Battery went flat. Opened car via key, accessed terminal under bonnet and connected battery. Car started fine but central locking doesn't operate via either key fob or dashboard button. More pressingly boot will not open, either via key fob or centre console button. Both fobs have new batteries and will arm immobilisor but will not lock car. Headrests do not fold down as well.
Now, I know the vacuum pump is in the boot, but how do I get in there please?

With the key? You've tried that haven't you? But I'm guessing the lock's seized. But in that case how did you get into the boot to connect the battery? Unless the battery is not in the boot. Or you're talking about a different battery.

I'm confused.

The key sends 2 types of signal: Radio signal and Light signal.
The Radio is the one normally used, and it seems like it has stopped working in your car.
The light signal, however, works on the driver's door only. If it doesn't, then be sure to clean the glass-front of the sensor (located on the outside, near the driver's door handle). It has a small range, so the key needs to be close to it to work.
Hope this will help.

Hope this clears up the confusion.

IS your battery dead again?
Yes Jay. I obviously need to charge/change the battery, but I cannot do that at the moment. I need to get in there and find out why the vacuum unit is not working and to check the fuses next to the battery.

Central locking is not working but the immobilisor is. The problem is related to the vacuum unit which is located in the boot adjacent to the petrol flap release.
Lock is seized.

Is the actual unit faulty or is it something else? If you need a vacuum unit PM me.

Still not managed to open the boot!
Any ideas please?

do you have rear folding seats?
if you have then you need to crawl inside through the backdoor.
take a flashlight with you and get the proper wrench to release the bootlock latch from the centre bottom panel, there are 2 plastic covers you need to remove and then unscrew 2 nuts and yourboot will pop open.
if you have folding rear seats always leave one of the backseats unlocked!

Kowalski mate. Many thanks for your input, but if I had reclining rear seats i would not be posting here.
Thank you though for taking time to post a reply.:thumb:

You will have to beat the lock in. This is done by breaking it by hitting the boot button hard with a large hammer.

Trust me it works.

You will need to replace the lock when done.

I'm sorry bud.
I thought you had a newer version of w202 with folding rearseats.
But, my info could help anyone else here on the forum.
I hope you fix your car! :thumb:

Breaking that bootcylinder will be an expensive cost though.

Even if it did have folding rear seats , the release for them is in the boot! :wallbash: :D

yeah, that might be true, however I never lock my backseats the lever is open all the time as a safety reason if I get a flat battery!
having experianced a flat battery and the rear seats locked in position, I had to unscrew the backpart on the bottom screws, so I was still lucky to access the boot!

I have about as late as you can get with 202.
Folding rear seats were an option.

I'm assuming Olly that even with 1 or 2 sharp blows will cause damage?

Have you done this?

Sorry mate.
I've only just picked up your 'last resort' suggestion. Better not try it this late or there might be someone else having a brush with the boys in blue eh?;)
