Brake pads & discs

Servo check: With engine off and car stationary pump the brake pedal a few times (to deplete residual vacuum) until the pedal is rock solid underfoot. Hold the pedal there and start the engine. As vacuum becomes available (on a functioning system) you will feel the pedal drop away from under your foot.

Had a van fail the MOT with similar problem, brakes all looked OK, did vac test as above ^^^ found a split in hose between vac pump and servo £7 length of vacuum hose sorted it out.

OP finding (non obvious) splits in vacuum hoses is not easy as you can not hear a leak, being a smoker helps as you can blow smoke at it and hope to find where the smoke gets sucked in.

Where the pipe enters the servo unit there is a one way valve on many systems you can just pop this out and you will be able to either (gently) blow compressed air down the pipe to listen or use soapy water spray to find a leak or use a hand vacuum pump to do an actual test. You can buy them quite cheap on line, but if it something you may never use again just go into any garage and ask them to to a vacuum test on the servo.

Thanks for that. I'm checking with Euro car parts as the discs I bought recently for an Audi A3 do not have a hologram sticker or QR code on the label. The pads have a QR code as described.
