Break checked and crashed

The Audi behind you was driving on the slip road or on the inner lane? Was the Audi behind you turning off the motorway, or continuing straight?
The Audi was exiting and I was exiting as well, we were still on the highway lane when he break checked me and signaling left.

In my attempt to pass him he sped up and swerved at me.

so it was a case of crash into the audi or break in front of the second car

Not wanting to turn this into an argument but lane one was empty so you could have continued straight on without side swiping the Audi or braking and being rear ended by the other Audi , an inconvenience granted but no more so than your current situation.

A couple of things i will take from this , buy myself a dashcam and mainly avoid Audi`s.

Main thing is no one was injured regardless as to who was at fault.

Thank you K, I appreciate it.

I think you are looking at this the wrong way, if you don't mind me saying so.

Your insurer will tell you if - from the insurance perspective - there's any prospect of claiming off the Audi's policy.

But, this should not be your focus. As a driver, you have just been in a situation that could have ended-up very badly.

Look at the footage, and ask yourself - what could I have reasonably done to avoid this? (I say 'reasonably', because you could have avoided it in many ways including satying at home or taking the train, but this will obviously be missing the point).

My view is that you should have kept a proper distance from the car in front of you at all times, and when the car acted in an unexpected manner, you should have slowed-down or stopped, giving it the space to do its next move.

This lesson can save you life (and the lives of others) in future, and to my mind is more important that who's policy will pay for the damage.

I appreciate it, you are completely right.

I don’t understand why you didn’t just continue in lane 1 after the Audi braked… it appears the only reason you crashed is that you didn’t want to miss your exit and get off at the next junction… which is only 3 miles away (you appear to be exiting at J15a Northampton/A43) 🤷‍♂️

It was clear from the start of the video that the Audi driver was uncertain and slowing down to assess their route. There was no brake check (or break check) just some appalling driving on your part. Suggest you hide that video from your insurer.

I was getting passed by another driver that was angry at the black audi too. And then he went on the far lane when he saw I was blocked.

I always think that if you have to brake hard on a normal free flowing motorway then you are not driving properly as just easing off the throttle should be enough most of the time even when entering a slip road that is clear ahead. So to that extent the Audi was been driven indecisively but then nervous indecisive drivers that brake at the sight of their own shadow are common enough. Once you have identified the driver in front is a nervous type then unless it's safe to overtake, all you can do is hang back and give them room and you didn't do that.

The Audi was signalling left in plenty of time. If you were leaving the motorway at the same junction, why did you not just slot in behind him. He did not brake check you, he braked for what ever reason, whether he thought he was going in too fast or changed his mind about exiting. it matters not. You were too close if you had to overtake him. If I was the Audi driver, I would be p####d of with the idiot in the Merc who did not have a clue about what he was doing:mad:

Interestingly, I am teaching my daughter driving these days... and always warn her when approaching slip roads to be on high alert and watch-out for indecisive drivers changing their minds in the last minute and either trying to take the slip road or going back on the main road while cutting across the reservation area....

Thank you.

You were in there in order to call me an idiot. The distance between the Audi and my car was normal. He decided to hit the brakes for brake checking me for some reasons (he has done it to other drivers prior to my accident and I could only see that going through my footage).

Not knowing that if he was going to do that again or not, I decided to over take him so I sped up. On my right hand side there was another driver that sped up in order to catch him as apparently he was pissed off at him from a previous brake check so I was caught in between. The audi was pushing me toward the right hand side while I had a car trying to over take us both on my right hand side and a van behind me.

No need for name calling, granted.

I understand what happened, but hand-on-heart, looking at the footage do you believe that in the circumstances the crash was unavoidable? Do you not think that you could have avoided the crash by handling the situation differently? This is how experience makes you a better driver.

If as you say he had been brake checking other drivers, would that not give you a clue to hang even farther back than normal. If that is name calling, wow, I give up.

Hi , don't know if it has been mentioned by you need to inform your insurance company because the Audi driver no doubt will notify his insurance company.

You have no idea as to what stories the driver will come up with !

You have stated above, that the Audi driver was driving erratically. Why did you simply not drop back and give him some room? He indicated for a long time and if you’d given yourself enough space, we wouldn’t be having this conversation today.

I have been on many defensive driving courses and you did everything they teach drivers not to do. Might be worth getting some defensive driving training. Cheaper than the next repair bill.

Happily no one was hurt.

Why? He/she appears to have driven on unaware and uninvolved.

There's no one there to blame other than yourself. While the audi is signaling left and you knew that he was gonna exit, why didn't you slow down too?!!
As for brake checking, your should have concentrated more on keeping your distance than flashing your lights at him
