Forgive my ignorance but I wanted to know the best way to connect two computers to my broadband line. Is it possible to simply purchase another ADSL modem and plug it into my laptop for use downstairs whilst my PC is used upsatirs? Have read about wireless connections etc but would rather have a sysytem where I can just plug the laptop downstairs into a phoneline and get broadband.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

You could in theory have multiple modems on multiple machines and providing that only one is connected to the line at a time, each will be able to dial independantly. Way too much hassle.

Easiest solution is a standalone router with a single connection to your isp, and either connect multiple machines by cable or by wireless. £100 will get you a kit to do this from most PC stores.

no you cannot just plug another one in.

You need a router of sorts to allow multiple connections.

Why plug in downstairs when you can use wireless and be totally free, upstairs downstairs garden garage etc etc

I use a pc and laptop both wireless and will never go back

A got a wireless router and a wireless laptop card from e-bay, new, for £27!!

It's only the older 'b' spec wireless system - but it's brilliant - the kids can do their homework in the bedroom using the laptop with web access, I can use the desktop downstairs at the same time.

or set up a peer to peer network if its only 2 computers - a simple spci card (wifi) in the desktop upstairs, and a pcmcia wifi card in the laptop.

cheaper, but the disadvantage is that the desktop (acting as the router in a way) has to be on for the laptop to connect to the 'net.

you have to find and set up the desktop pc to allow internet connection sharing.

We use a netgear adsl firewall router, two pc's sharing one broadband connection. Not the cheapest system, but it works well in the office.
