Read all the figures quoted but what are the real world mpgs ??

looking to get another c class 1998-2000 model, preferably a sport and pref auto

looking at either a C200 or a C240

Is the C240 mpg much worse than C200 ???

and what about general costs - common faults etc

thanks

Chris

I would expect the 240 to be quite a lot more expensive to run than a 200.
I had a 1993 C220 (petrol) which gave low-mid 30's on petrol or high 20's on LPG (not that I would advise that option)

My 1999 C220CDi give 43-44, but most of that is dual cariageway driving.

Depends on your driving. We used to get low-mid 20s out of our CLK 240.

Agreed.

I use my c240 for 90% motorway miles. I generally get 370 miles out of a tank (needle just below reserve segment) out of usual motorway speeds. 29-32mpg. Falls to the floor when you use it around town.

Going from a C200 to a C180 and you will hardly notice any difference.

If you test drive a C240 it should feel loads faster if you floor it, the extra 2 cyliders do make a difference. If it doesnt, then the MAS is on its way out/needs replacing (around £150) easy job though.

Around town with a heavy foot and it can be thirsty, on the motorway however you get a hell of a lot more MPGs, ive had mine for 3 years now and I still love it! :D

2001 W203 C240 -
Regular commute is 6 miles each way and the computer seems to average about 20mpg during the week.
On a good steady run of about 175 miles I got up to 32mpg at one point, but was in rather a rush to get home so the the right foot became a bit heavier and the drive averaged just over 29mpg.

I'm just off out for a drive now, so I shall try to remember to check the figures, and let you know total miles and mpg since last reset when I get home.

For the amount the C240 drinks I'd be inclined to say it might be worth looking at the C280. I bet you it will return almost identical consumption figures while having an extra 20-odd bhp.

But yes, the 240 will be considerably thirstier than the 200 in town only. But on a motorway I think the 240 might actually be better then the little 4 banger. So it depends on your driving habits,

I'd go with Adams idea, a C280 is a better bet than a C240 or what about a C230k...bit more frugal and C280 quick...

As always its condition thats paramount, so a nicer 240 is better than a tired 280...

Averaged 30.59mpg over the 55k miles I did in mine - my regular commute was 45 miles motorway and 35 A/B road.

The C230k is a fantastic car because its as economic as the 4 banger c200 in town and slightly quicker than the C280. Motorways it does about 34-35mpg. The only disadvantage (if it bothers you) is that its not as smooth as the 6cyl cars, but its an absolute blast to drive, especially in manual! :)

Thanks for all the comments chaps !!

Still not managed to find the "right car" yet and still looking !!!

Bringing the c280 into the mix might give me more options !!!

Cheers

Well got 2 on the radar at the moment

1. 1999 V c200 elegance (wanted sport really but what the hell ) Its absolutly mint. 75K, 1 owner, FSH, Leather etc etc. Dealer wants top money (£2999) Only thing putting me off is that the car doesnt have alloys. might sound silly I know but cant be driving a merc with plastic wheel trims !!!
Told the dealer Id probably have it if it had alloys or if he would reduce price to allow me to buy some but he wont budge. says hes only just lowered prive from £3200

2. 1999 T c230k sport - 103K - 2 owners (1 company) small dent in front wing, leather etcetc - £2489 yet to see it yet put looks ok

Where have all the c class sports gone when you want one ????

Chris

Dont rush into it! I took nearly 3 months getting mine, the ideal spec will appear if you wait.

Dont want to rush ........ but need a car soon !!!!

Ideally a Silver C200 or C240 sport with less than 100k miles (or there abouts) with no rusty wheel arches or boot lock !!!!!

Might go back to the garage with the elegance and work on him a bit more !!!!

If your after a Sport, and end up with an Elegance you will always look at it and regret not waiting a little longer :)

I know, I know but fed up with scrounging lifts now !!!!!!!

and sods law says if I buy the elegance, the week after ebay and autotrader will be full of sports !!!!!!

An elegance without alloys? Doesn't sound right. Sounds like a classic to me.
Has it got the chrome trim on the bumpers?
