Well last week the usual wiper stuck at 1 o'clock position on my 97 C250 estate. Stripped system and plastic gear in motor stripped. So took it apart knocked shaft through gear a bit and replaced shim with thicker M12 washer to reposition gear within wiper motor gearbox so worm had something to grip on. I also levered off the brass contact plate and moved it around gear to next set of holes so the worn section of gear was in a different phase of the wiper sweep and put it all back together. It lasted all week with torrential rain and wipers on full time! Maybe of some use as a temp fix. Searched scrappys and could only get earlier motor with 5 pin plug so bought it for £30 and fitted it by chopping off the wiring from original motor and using crimp on female bullets to go onto the plug (only 4 wires on original and 5 on the earlier version, black wire is redundant).
The earlier motor seems much more robust, bigger gear ,more teeth on worm and all round better made. Did all the usual lubricating of linkage whilst off the car and all is perfect once more. There seems to be three different motors available part no.s ending 308 and 408 are interchangable and 422 ( or is it 442) the older type with different plug, but with a bit of inginuity they all fit and work.
