Another fishing for advice request....

I'm interested in either a C or E class, 2012 on with either 220 or 250 Cdi.

I know there are plenty of people who would advice going for a bigger engine, but the facts are that the 4 cylinder running costs suit best.

C class is big enough, but I would buy E if people think it is better made.
I like the balance of performance/costs of the 250, but is is as reliable as the 220?

Any views on which spec to go for?

Thanks

Don't think there's much difference in c and e apart from size. 250 better but rarer and 220 can be remapped to 250 power. Om611 220 and 250 are same engine different tune I believe.

That said if I could afford it I'd be in a 350cdi.

The E is the OM651 engine, both the 220 and 250 are identical twin turbo units with different states of tune.

Having owned and extensively driven all three (220/250/350CDI) I can honestly say that on a run the V6 CDi is more frugal, round town the 250 the better.

And as good as the 4cyl is, and how long it'll last, it is a bit agricultural to my ears, especially in the C-Class, not so bad in the E.

350cdi

Close thread.

As others have said, the 220 and 250 are exactly the same engine.

As for a C or an E, that is a personal choice. Test drive both at your local dealer to see which floats your boat.

Personally, I wouldn't have either the 220 or 250, preferring the 3.0 Litre V6 over the 2.1 Litre straight four, so I would suggest that if you are thinking of an E, test drive a 350 CDI before making your final choice.

I would go for the 250,more power and more or less identical mpg.

I've owned both W204 C-Class and W212 E-Class (a 350CDI as well as the mad E63). I'm not sure that there's any significant difference in build quality between the models, but the E rides better, is better balanced when pressing on, and is generally better equipped. It also has an enormous boot and hangs out the end of pretty much every parking bay

If you're fixed on the 4-pot engine, then the refinement is better in the E than in the C. Even in the E-Class the 220 engine provides enough performance for most driving, but the 250 is noticeably quicker without really sacrificing any economy. Around town and for short runs the 4-pot will be more economical, but as Lee (SPX) says above, the economy of the much nicer V6 is comparable on motorway runs.

250 quicker than 220 with no loss of fuel economy. Better torque & bhp.
E obviously bigger inside & out and usually better equiped.
