My 1996 c180 seems to have developed a problem where the following happens: -
a) Idle - Car runs fine and revs to the limit
b) Stationary in D - Idles and every few seconds feels like it's ready to cut out
c) Pulling away from stop - Hesitates and sometimes backfires
d) Slowing down for turn etc - As soon as you press the accelerator it hesitates and sometimes backfires

The strange thing is as soon as your moving there’s no problem, don’t seem to notice any problem increasing speed while moving.

I've checked the plugs and they seem fine, MASS was changed about 7000 miles ago.

Do you think this could be a MASS problem? Number on the one fitted is 0280217114, is there any other numbers?

Any help would be appreciated.

Wully, have you checked previous posts on this very subject and symptoms? Here is one thread amongst many highlighting erratic idling problems and potential solutions. It boils down to a process of elimination involving several components which you either clean, recondition, or replace.

- Air Mass Sensor
- Throttle Body aka Idle Speed Slide Actuator
- Lambda sensors
- Kickdown cable aka Transmission Control Pressure Cable

You will find your symptom descriptions so very similar to every one elses including mine ... it seems something happening at about now due to the age of components in our cars ... being in the mid 90s. You can read my post of what my mech did. Very long story.

Your p/n seems a bit 'high' for a 1996 model. My MAF is 000 094 0048 and I would have thought yours would be similar - yours from MB or hope its not an ebay item gone wrong? Is the part where the wire connector plugs into the original MAF rectangular or round?

Your not going to believe this but after reading through what i can only describe as too many threads about MASS sensors i decided to do the following and it has cleared my problems.

1. Replaced 4no plugs (existing plugs were replaced about 7000 miles ago, no issues on removal)
2. Replaced Air filter and cleaned housing
3. Disconnected battery for about an hour and a half

No more backfires!

Another satisfied customer ;) :D
