Car
CLS350 CDI sport
The CLS went into the dealership for a minor recall and they gave me a bright red C180 petrol estate. Decent car really, however very very startled to see an average mpg for the 3,500 miles it had covered as 27.5. I managed 27.4 in the 35 miles I had it.

Just seemed low. I get 35 in the CLS 350 for the same commute, and had higher expectations ....

3,500 loaned miles hmmmmmmmmmmm. Not been ragged at all then. (Not during your time of course) Bet its not had its tyre pressures checked since PDI.

A bigoted comment there.
Why do you incorrectly assume everyone rags loan cars, most are regular drivers?

The O/p managed exactly the same 27mpg...it's what these cars do.

I've also been surprised how thirsty these cars are when i've had them as loaners, especially given the uninspiring performance. True it is a petrol but many modern petrol cars are capable of better than this, especially as this presumably had all the gizmos such as start/stop. Relatively heavy cars I suppose.

Thanks for reminding me, yes it was in E with ECO selected and so stalled at every junction

Lol managing over 25mpg for the first 550 miles with my SLK55 AMG........bit of motorway driving in that on 4cylinders!!

RR

What did you expect from a petrol engine?

At least 155 mph. Proper acceleration until the redline and a seamless shift up. A smile.

If I wanted to drive a diesel then I would be paid to drive it.

I spend my wages on my car. I want pleasure.

Next question please ....

That is crap! I would expect more too!!

I used to get better from my W203 C230 and you would expect a newer C180 with stop start etc to hit 40mpg.

I can manage it in the petrol b170 with all the family in etc.

Mine is an older C180, I get 25mpg in town, and up to 40mpg on Motorway with very light foot at legal speed limit, so what you describe sounds about right.

Not sure if there are many petrol cars out there with similar output that have better mpg figures? The M271 engine produces between 143-156 and 196 bhp (or more?), depending on tune, that's quite a lot of power from an otherwise non-sporty 1.8L, and the car weighs upwards of 1.4t, so fuel consumption suffers.

Drivers who do mega miles and care about mpg will probably buy the least-powerful diesel in the range.

Are you feeling alright?

Absolutely.

I drove a diesel Golf this week for a few hundred miles.

What a revelation getting into a car with a proper engine.

If I wanted to get a feeling of pull with no end point to completely satisfy you then I would aim to shag a girl with whooping cough.

I never understand why people post the maximum output when discussing general driving as only about 20 of those horses are in use for urban speeds, about 65 horse will do a ton, the rest is for faster than that.

When asked to produce all the available power, this car won't do anywhere near 27mpg.

135k on a 5.0 l V8 M175

25mpg average. 300+ BHP, loads more torquey things. W220 LWB so around 2 tonnes. Loads of smiles.

Suppose I have to feel let down :(

I just don't get your line of posting.

27mpg is what these engines do...which is about right for a petrol engine.

You asked what one expected from a petrol engine. I merely stated my requirements and findings. ****loads of power, smiles and fun. I pays my money, I takes my choice.

If you want economy - take public transport.

If you want business economy - buy the most frugal oil-burner you can find and tell your employees to accept it or bugger off.

For personal pleasure - it has to be petrol, in a V configuration with as many horses and cylinders as you can throw at it. Tell me a performance sports car manufacturer whose business model is built around a diesel engine ?
