c180 elegence
hi, new member so please excuse me if i am in the wrong place,
my old 98 c180 elegence developed a rattle straight after i stalled her,
the noise is like a stone in a tin can!! it goes as i press the clutch peddle, so i thought thrust bearing, so bought 1 and took box off (not much room under theese!) bearing was kaput, changed it but the box wouldnt go back on, as i found the pilot bearing in flywheel was also broke, so put a new one in, got the box back together and its still making the same noise, and it still goes when i press the clutch, i have noticed that the more i rev the engine the faster/louder the noise, just seems mad that it happend after i stalled it, as ive not had any problems before, im at a real loss with it now, has anyone ever had a similar situation or indeed any ideas,
apreciate any help i can get, should mention that all gears select fine and it drives as it should other then the rattle
thanks

does it rattle when under load? when u say just after i stalled her, u mean when u turned the car off? or??? not some thing silly like cat broken up? i've had that before

hi thanks for reply, it rattles when stood still, driving, in nutral and in gear, but stops when clutch pressed, i stalled at some trafic lights, foot slipped of the peddle!! i understand what your saying about cat but this noise is very loud like shaking a stone in a tin can!!
thanks again

when u took the box out, did u put a new clutch and pressure plate in? wonder if the pressure plate has a broken finger or rivet. The arm that pushs the bearing was ok? no cracks or loose on the pivot point?

hi, the clutch had been done not long ago and all seemed ok, looked at the "throw arm" when fitting the new thrusty and looked ok, dont remember checking the springs on the plate though, do you think its possible that ive replaced the pilot bearing in flywheel but is there a bearing at the other end of the shaft, ie in the actual gearbox end???
regards

wouldnt have thought so, only bearings that i seen is the release bearing, and a copper bush that pushes into the flywheel (on some cars) when its rattling is there a vibration? if so might have a loose flywheel, only had that once on a car, but i was running 400bhp through a pug 205 flywheel and pulled the threads out the fly. Be the same as coming loose

hi, ive replaced the bearing in the centre of the flywheel, i also checked the dmf for excessive play, theres no vibration at all and the rattle is not a constant even rattle its always there but not even if that makes sense, ive put a screwdriver on box and listened through it and when i put it on the engine side of the bell housing i cant hear it but when i go back along the gbox it is bad,
got to say 400bhp through a 205 flywheel!!!! must of been a good 10 min though, lol

so the noise is coming from inside the gearbox??
Yeah the 205 had full cage 2 seats, 306 gti-6 engine and 6speed gearbox, with throttle bodys, omex management, 207 shot of nos. Pocket rocket. head gasket didnt like the nos lol Just needed a better flywhell then that was fine and the next thing down the line broke
