C250 CDI AMG Sport Plus
Evening,

I'm new to the forum and not quite yet a Mercedes owner (looking to change that!).

I'm just about to put a deposit down on a new C220 CDI Blueefficiency 7-G Sport Plus, but I've been told that the delivery is likely to be late/early october.

I've been offered a C250 cdi blueefficiency 7-G Sport Plus instead, with a delivery date of mid July and the cost isnt too much more...

I've ran insurance quotes - both the same.

The dealer tells me that both cars are the same road tax bracket (I need to confirm this myself) but also that the MPG of both cars is virtually the same...

I always take the claimed MPG stats at face value and I'm after a bit of advise whether or not I'll really be able to tell much of a difference in real life... perhaps from some current owners?

I'm aware theres a thread already about the C250CDI's MPG's and I've read through that, but a bit unsure about the C220's to compare it against.

Would be grateful to hear from some of you guys about which option you would take engine wise, and any guidance on the differences in efficiency that I may notice?

Perhaps anything I've overlooked that might be worth considering?

Thanks a lot, and hopefully I'll be an owner soon!

I have a 250 and the extra power is worth it in my opinion. Get 42 mpg overall and 48-50 on longer runs.

I see you have a BMW 3series. A c220cdi is 320d performance, a C250cdi is Alpina D3 performance?

I drove a new shape E220cdi and it was pleasant, in a C class that will be ample, but the 250cdi will have more power and be more fun, for not much more fuel/insurace/tax(if any) costs. it might be less refined and more peaky in the power delivery, but that merely adds a bit of character to an engine in dire need of character.

No brainer on the E220 vs 250, got to be 250 every time.

Hey Steve,

Don't fancy a 2010 Alpina D3 with 40k miles on it for £18k do you?
It is white with dark red/oxblood leather and looks amazing.

I can't believe he is going to take £18k trade in!!

250, it can only be so.

Sounds nice, is it an automatic?

No. :(

It was such an expensive option as you not only paid £1400 for the auto 'box but you also lost the £3k discount for changing the spec.

Thanks guys, I think I'm going to run with the c250 will let you know how I get on...

Just on the side of a C220 - MPG rarely falls under 50mpg unless really bogged down in traffic throughout the journey. Engine isn't as powerful as the C250 agreed, but if your not really filling the thing up with 5 people and a boot full of goodies, I doubt you'll notice the difference.

I had a C220cdi and now have an E250cdi. There is a discernable power difference and as has been said no additional VED costs etc. I think the mpg is worse around town with the average mpg rapidly going down and taking a while to creep back up again once out of town. I know mine is an E coupe but I have averaged a true 47mpg over its first 5000miles (say 2/3 motorway and A roads and 1/3 town) with a best tank of 53mpg and worst of 43mpg. After that being said my 250 has a nice exhaust tone! On balance worth choosing the 250 over the 220.
Regarding colour my coupe is calcite white with red flamenco (poor name as the colour is better descibed as ox-blood) leather. Works really well and is soemthing completely different to the norm. Enjoy.

I have a C220 CDI, for me I was more interested in the MPG, the C220 is averaging about 53MPG on a full tank. The power is ample for me (i'm 25) I think if I was a little older I may have gone for the C250.

Hope that helps.

Plenty of go in our C220 (170hp), you could easily lose your licence if you pushed on in it.

Probably the best all round car I've ever owned.

I had a BMW 320d and now the C250 7g auto. I've very pleased with it, econ about same as the BMW but I get more power and it is more fun to drive. The twin-turbo effect is very good.

A BMW manual alpina for ST, I guess without the leather he would have that straight away :)

I'd rather have the auto, avoids dual mass fly wheels. I do suffer from a back issue and could probably cope with a manual, an automatic car really is more suitable.

Leather, not a fan either, but for red leather, I would make an exception.

One vote for C220

I got the C220 last September but notice now the C250 has same official mpg figures. Back in September this was not the case, so they tweaked the engine during the last 10 months. As I am so tight I also spotted that if you change the wheels from 17 inch to 16 inch alloys you drop the tax to a lower level as the CO2 changes. This was a no-cost upgrade.

Had my first service today and have done 16K miles in the vehicle. My loan vehicle was a E250 CDI and to be quite honest my C220 has far more zip and refinement.

My mpg on motorway runs is now between 56 and 62mpg :bannana:and this is the C220 with 7G so very impressive. (During winter and on winter tyres this was about 50mpg but I doubt the car was run in) On short town runs of about 5 miles I get about 43mpg.

Dont forget on the 7G you have a switch with E and S. E is Economy and S is Sport or Stupid mode:thumb:. When in S the C220 is a little rocket ship and gives me more than enough fun the C class is relatively small so on the motorway the C220 has ample power. I will press the the button to select S if on country roads and wanting to overtake and you can scare yourself with the difference.

If I was going to buy today I may go for C250 as they claim same mpg and if insurance etc is all same you are not loosing much. But would still go for the 16 inch alloys at no cost. This gives great ecomomy and also reduces the cost of tyres by £50 to £60 a corner and lowers the tax :thumb:

The other question is are the service costs the same?

I will get some images off him and some details.

Actually, he signed up here as he was looking at an C220 or C250 sport estate.
Chrisbin is his username.

This was the image I sent him when he was trying to think what colour leather to have in his car, so guess it looks like this...

I had a chat with Mika re his Alpina B3 on his thread, he found us some auto ones, but they are rare.

Cloth suits me better, but I can see why someone would really want this car.
