I think that the display rotates and will turn red when the air filter gets choked. You reset it when you change the filter.
That is the theory. I have had my car 12 years, done over 330K miles and have never seen it move.
Maybe I change my air filter too often. I do take the filter out occasionally and bang it against the garage wall to get the crud out of it.
