My car has been having problems starting lately

I took the car to my brothers house the other night and it was parked facing downhill and it started first time

Had loads of trouble starting it again today on my drive which is level, but then drove into town and parked it facing uphill, and it would not start at all, wasn't even trying to start, but still see no bubbles in the clear fuel lines

could this be a leak from somewhere before the pump?

fuel filter seems fine, the fuel is tracking back into the tank somehow, its still refusing to start when facing uphill, struggles on the flat and is fine when facing downhill

can't see any air in the clear fuel lines apart from the odd tiny bubble

Common problem due to possibly two things;

Fuel pipes seals, these leak from all of the joints if not periodically replaced and will most likely be the issue here, if not check the non return valve located underneath the washer bottle.

Once you have eliminated/fixed those items post back your findings :thumb:

anyone got the part numbers for the seals and non return valve?

Also check the pre fuel filter by the side of the main filter.

are there any guides on how to replace the seals?

got no clue where to start

any info on parts numbers would help too

Got the plastic pipes yesterday along with a seal for the shut off valve and pre filter

anyone got a pic or diagram of the shut off valve and pre filter as I have no idea where these seals go?

hopefully it is the clear pipes, but it could also be the delivery valve seals! change the clear pipes 1st as they are easiest. i had the same problem and never was right until the delivery valve seals were replaced too.

as for fitting - do a search for "clear fuel pipes" or similar on here - lots of info

well i hope its these as I'm out of work and can't afford to keep eliminating things

can anyone point out to me where the shut off valve seal and pre filter seal is?

if its like the 606 engine there is a prefilter on the side of the casing where the main screw on filter is. Take off the 10mm bolt (47 in pic above) and prise off the filter. You'll see a large oring (29) and also another smaller oring (26). i'd replace both. of course 605 engine may be different - i cant remeber for sure. the shut off is the black "box" thing that is on the side of the IP just behind the main screw on filter.

Where are you located?

If your short of pennies you can just buy the O rings without the plastic pipes, not sure of the price difference.

yes thats it. it has a large o-ring in it.

cheers

any ideas how you get it off?

I can see one bolt that I have already taken off but its not budging

not sure as i dont have this style on my W124. Be careful as i've heard them to crack/break easily so dont force it until you know how it comes off from another member. Try PM'ing Olivier on here (he has a W210 which has this style shut off valve and will know the answer).

I've answered you're questions in full on the "other side" by the way.

its a wee tricky to spot. I think you must have removed the one on the right ( is that correct?), this is the one on the left that is slightly hidden( I think).

if you are standing on the passenger side of the car looking into the engine bay I have taken the bolt off the right hand side of the valve

can't see anything on the lhs though
