Going to look at a CD270CDi on Friday in Bradford (2001 MY)

What should I be looking for? Anybody knowledgeable want to join me? That would be most helpful!! So far got:
 • Rust (Where typically? Already got bottom of doors & wheel arches)
 • Front suspension squeaks
 • Injector blow by and inlet manifold issues (how do I check for this?)
 • Floor it to make sure it revs above 3k and that kickdown works
 • Check engine temperature gets to above 80C fairly quickly
 • Check service history to see if ATF and filter have been changed
As always, thanks a bundle :thumb:

Also check if it has a Valeo radiator, if it does get it changed ASAP.

Does a Valeo have a green dot to identify it or something? I am sure it will not be as simple as a big VALEO on it! lol

Quick high rev producing cloud of black smoke from exhaust could mean (but not always) inlet manifold flap wear or damage. Also check all electrics are fully functioning i.e. seats, windows, door locks etc. Mine had a faulty indicator stork (wouldn't stay up on rhs turn). Decent service history important. Good luck, don't have to buy first car you see, there are plenty of good ones out there. I would go for Avantgarde spec.

A Valeo radiator has straight toothed crimping of the rad end tanks, cars after 2003 were replaced with Behr radiators which solved the problem. The Behr radiator has a wavy strip of metal crimping around the end tanks. Pics below:

If it has the Valeo, how much are we talking (ball park) to replace? And it is it a DIY job for someone who is able to follow A-B-C instructions!

Car I am looking at is here. Comments welcome. I'll ask for the VIN later so I can get the data card

If its got a brand new turbo on it walk away, nope, run at battle speed.

Looking at the pictures. Very nice Sir. On the money with some room for negotiation at that price.

Looks like it might have two keys. As you know these cost a packet if you need a spare.

WDC = Built in South Africa. Only the estates were built in Germany (WDB)

Replacement radiator at EuroCarParts - You then have the MB Club members discount.

Nice motor with a great equipment spec Steve. Don't forget to make sure everything works as it should.

Why is it to be avoided if it has a new turbo please?

New key £227 as I've recently found out.

Appreciated. Is replacing a DIY job? If not, do you know ballpark what it would cost to have done? (or number of mechanic hours)

I would advise against DIY unless you have previous experience.
Having checked a well known workshop manual to see what is involved it appears to be quite a complex job as they say that the electric cooling fan and bumper need to be removed. The condenser for the air-con needs to be lowered out of the way and tied up without damaging the refrigerant lines. The automatic transmission heat exchanger fluid hoses also need to be clamped.
As for cost or man hours to do the job, sorry I don't have any idea.

On the bright side.......the car may not have a Valeo rad.

C270CDi AvantGarde

Going to take a look at this in Bradford (BD7) late this afternoon (anybody knowledgeable around locally to look with me please?)

Thanks to this wonderful forum, got the following list of gotchas so far (looks impressive - well it would be if I knew what I were doing. LOL!) Anything to add?

 • Rust (especially bottom of doors & wheel arches)
 • Front suspension squeaks/knocks
 • Injector blow by and inlet manifold issues - Quick high rev producing cloud of black smoke from exhaust could mean (but not always) inlet manifold flap wear or damage
 • Floor it to make sure it revs above 3k and that kickdown works
 • Check engine temperature gets to above 80C fairly quickly
 • Check service history to see if ATF and filter have been changed
 • Two keys
 • SatNav disc
 • All electrics fully functioning i.e. seats, windows, door locks, indicator stalk etc.
 • Decent service history important (ATF been changed?)
 • Clunky gearchange
 • Valeo or Behr radiator (Straight/Wavy crimping)

Car in the link seems a tad pricey in my opinion. I'm looking for one of these myself and have seem quite a few lower mile examples at least a grand cheaper. Nice looking car though.

Input appreciated. I didn't think it was overpriced by that much (my gut feel was to offer around £3K) and have not seen any at the level you mention. Any links?

All helps!

The search continues....

Went to look and to my novice eye the mechanicals sounded OK but I feel there are too many negatives that will cost to put right. May make a totally stupid offer just for the hell of it. C270CDi on at £3295 - what does the panel think? MY2001, 104K miles
 • Wheels all with usual MB laquer lift - will definately need refurb
 • Rust on bottom corner of front doors, edges of wings. Not terrible but will need attention to stop it getting that way. Ful MB service up to 90K but then specialist so no chance of MB contribution.
 • 2 new tyres needed
 • Interior needs a serious valet
 • Think the radiator is original, therefore Valeo = may need replacing
 • No SatNav disk for COMAND
 • Most important - SuzyCute does not have a good feeling about it!
Over to you!
