hi all, need help in solving the vibration, the has done this twice in 3 weeks, it starts to vibrate, bad enough that I have to pull over, when I set off its fine, first time I was doing 70 ish and today about 50, the whole car rumbles and vibrates, not all the time, its a 2001 reg, anybody help, cheers:wallbash:

Need more info on the vibration. Where you feel it etc.

You could have a tyre de laminating. Is you get an egg under the tread blown out by heat.

Sent from my iPhone using MBClub UK

if it were the engine mounts wouldn't it vibrate all the time though

Propshaft, centre bearing? I had this problem with a BMW E23, it made the whole car shake.

thanx for all your comments but wouldn't these problems cause it to vibrate all the time

Don`t know what Mercs have on the propshaft for connecting purposes but if any Hardy Spicer joints are involved it will be that.

The reason for vibration coming and going is that when one joint starts to break up it can loose some pins/rollers from one part of the joint and it will go out of balance quite badly but then when different forces act on it the cap with the pins in will move to a different position because some are missing thus causing it to balance out and no vibration.

When it gets bad you will hear an awful crunching screeching sound but still just drivable.

If it is the propshaft you will feel the vibration mainly through the seat of your pants.

Had this on my 740 Volvo`s years ago.

Just had a look in my book and i believe cos better motors mercs have rubber doughnuts as connectors for the drive for prop...maybe one has just perished away due to age and then the bolts will move or loosen causing out of balance.

Wheel weight fallen off ?

Could it be:
1. Wheel balancing
2. Wheel alignment
3. Engine/gearbox mounts

Does it get worse at particular speeds, or at higher speeds?

Have you had the wheels aligned and balanced recently? Just bought the car?

had the car 8 months now, happened twice now at low and high speeds, pull over and set off and its fine

I had weird wobbly vibrations once after the wheels were balanced using a miscalibrated balancer. The wobbling/vibrations got worse with higher speeds. After a rebalance with a correctly calibrated machine the car was perfect.

I'm not sure that this is the same problem as your car has though...it sounds different.

Incorrectly aligned wheels can cause strange things too (excessive toe-in/out?), but I expect you've had them checked since you've had it?

Well they should have balanced the wheels when you had the new tyres fitted. And if this was the problem, then you would surely have had some issue every day, and not just a couple of times.

Just re-read...only happened twice in the last 3 weeks at about 50/70 mph. You don't remember the wheels getting kerbed do you?

Oh well, good luck checking this.

no not been kerbed either mate if the wheels are fine when I check them I will just wait till something else happens and hope for the best

Ok good luck and it'd be good to hear what the cause is.
