Hi all..
Lately my fuel gauge has been giving me erratic readings. For example, if i start the car it will read half a tank. Turn it off and restart and it reads just over quarter of a tank.
Last night the petrol light came on whilst driving home, this morning it reads just under quarter of a tank!
Question is, problem with the cluster or sender in the tank?
Has any one else suffered this problem?
The car is 98 estate 117k miles.

I think that sounds about right for a 4.3 V8 :D

Sorry - someone had to say it :doh:

Sounds like perhaps the sender in the tank is playing up?

Hi,
I have had erratic fuel gauge readings in my C230K (prefacelift) was always solved by quality branded fuel and/or good quality fuel additive.
I have never "as yet" had issues with my C43, but i quite often use a fuel additive in it, try it does cost.
If the above doesn,t work it will most likely be one of your fuel tank sender units, like Will says.

when does these fuel senders start to give trouble?
is it only on hi mileage cars?

Cheers will,
Any way of testing the sender in the tank?

I always put super unleaded in mine, and i have only noticed this in the past week.
Actually since i came back from Holland, round trip of 700 miles.
Used a full tank each way.
Any particular brand of fuel additive to try?

Andy,
you mentioned "sender units," i take it there are 2?
Are they the same??

I had to change mine, at just over 101k for this reason - there are 2 of them, and you also need a special tool to open the tank...... quite easy to do though.

Try s9me fuel system cleaner first. This works sometimes.

Have change fuel to shell super and it has seemed to cure the problem for now. Was using sainsbury premiun unleaded before.
Will keep an eye on it for the next few weeks and keep you posted.
Thanks for all the advice.

do C43's have to run on higher octane fuel (i.e super) or is regular 95 ron ok?

Hi,
The engine can run on 95 RON, though some people run there's on 97-98 RON and reckon it runs smoother and are more economical, but never noticed it myself. There was quite a long thread on this very subject somewhere on the forum.

thanks bud

was it specific to C43 or AMG mercs in general

what do you run yours on ?

as already mentioned - use injector cleaners /fuel additives and/or vpower to clean the fuel system. Has worked on my W202 gauge, it's gone from being in a coma to something like parkinson's in two weeks. Hopefully a few more long runs will finally cure it..

Have always run my AMG's on super unleaded and I try and use Shell V-Power as much as I can.

On the C32, running a higher octane/cleaner fuel for a few tanks certainly seems to have helped towards curing my misfire...

We dont have shell stations in NI anymore - BP Ultimate would be my local fill up
