Hi,

My 507 has just done 13000 miles and I have noticed recently that braking performance doesn't seem to be optimal. I am on my second set of pads but there is plenty of life left in them but I have noticed my front discs have a lot of cracks in them. I am no stranger to disc cracking as I used to have 993 Porsche brakes and the holes used to crack on them after a while. My brakes have also started to squeal a bit now.

I test drove a new M3 today and I once I got back in my car I could really tell my brakes have lost their 'bite'.

Anyone else got hairline cracks on their brake discs?

My old C63 had bad hairline cracks, the MB stance for warranty replacement is the cracks have to be larger than 25mm. Looks like the holes could do with a clean up too.

Mine were like this:

I pushed pretty hard and tried a few dealers but no joy, as they are circa £2000+ to replace. I think mine came about when I jetwashed the car on the way home from a track day which was silly with hindsight.

New pads after 13000 miles is some going, you must hammer them hard - do you do track days? Perhaps change the fluid?

I just sold it on with the scored / cracked discs, it popped up a year later on AutoTrader with the same discs still on it!

If you killed the first set of pads in 13k miles, you're not what anyone would call "light" with your braking ;)

I would suggest that the pads are glazed. This can happen if you're too heavy on the brakes before they're properly bedded in and overheat them - which could be the case if you used the new set in the same way you did the first?

Only solution is another new set of pads, and bed them in carefully.

Yes - actually replaced the first set at 6000 miles give or take - but I have done some track events and the Nurburgring a couple of times but saying that, the second set were bedded in by AMG as they fitted them and they 'bedded' them in straight after they fitted them, when I did the Spa event that is part of the AMG Drivers Package and they were and have been fine - its just recently they seem to have started to squeal and not feel so good.

Ahh, yes you treated them even harder than I had done mine - I just think they are not really up to track use to be honest.

Try giving them a good pressure wash at the discs, when they are cold of course. You will be amazed at the amount to of dust that gets washed out of the holes.

I do this on mine and it always cures the squeal until the dust collects in the holes again.

Probably right in fact - the car is in need of a wash atm, just haven't had the time. Will wash and report back if any difference.

Now, on to that creaking drivers seat....
