Hi everyone,

I am looking for an inexpensive (hopefully DIY) solution to what I describe as the 'empty' sound of the COMAND system. I have the NTG 2.5 APS, fitted towards the end of production on the W211. It has a built in amp.

I am happy with the power, the volume is fine. For my ears, the bass is ample and so is the high end. It's the mid range that lacks depth and clarity. I find, particularly with songs from the 60's and 70's, that it sounds muddy and echoey and it's fatiguing to listen to.

I am wondering if speaker replacements will alleviate the problem? If so, are there any particular speakers you would recommend?

Please could you also let me know how many speakers I have? I can see 2 tweeters in the front door, two mid range speakers in the front door, 2 of the same in the back doors and a centre dash mounted speaker. There appear to be 2 tweeter type covers in the back doors too but there is no sound coming from them.

I'm getting OCD about this so I would really appreciate any input!

Have a great weekend ;)

I had Morel speakers and Alpine subwoofer fitted by www.comand.co.uk and the result is brilliant.

The speakers connect to a standard COMAND unit (no additional amp), though my car being a newer model than yours has the NTG4.5 unit so I guess it's not a direct comparison.

(I did have the NTG2.5 fitted to a previous car, but then I didn't upgrade the speakers at the time....)

Hope this helps.

It's a slippery slope, you may end up with something like this!

Consider a underseat sub that can handle the low frequencies, freeing up your door speakers to handle the mid range without having to move the large quantities of air that low frequencies need.

I had all door speakers replaced with Morels too. I bought the Morels from the company in Israel (ebay) and paid command.co.uk to fit them for me.
I was looking for more bass and possibly the replacement of the parcel shelf subwoofer, but I find there is plenty of bass and midrange. The whole sound is on a different level.
I had the command NTG4.5 plus the HK upgrade, the HK speakers went in the bin.

Did that include the tweeters?

I had Morel speakers with integral speakers fitted in the rear doors, and Morel speakers with separate tweeters fitted in the front doors.

That's the range:

Comand UK recommended the Maximo speakers which are described 'enrty-level' in the Morel car audio range.

Well the sound is deafening - I don't think I would have survived whatever is the 'next level up' in the Morel range... :(

But hey, some of them audiophiles are crazy! :)

Thanks Markjay, much appreciated.

i had these; MOREL TEMPO ULTRA 602 2WAY COMPONENT SPEAKER SYSTEM 6.5" 120W RMS- installed in the front and the Maximo in the rear. The tempo ultra i got from Morel on ebay for £181.

What do you think of the sound improvement?

The whole sound has improved - the bass response is much better with a more open and clear mid-range and no harsh treble firing at my ears - which was a problem with the HK sound.
All these observations are from the drivers seat btw.
