Check the reg on Euro car parts . If they list a timing belt kit , consider that it's a belt .

Nothing wrong with a belt... had a few cars with a belt driven engine, and after one failed and destroyed the engine back in 1997, I've learnt my lesson and always had the belt replaced at the manufacturer's recommended intervals. Never had an issue
since. As long as the belt is replaced on time (typically every 4 or 5 years), you should be fine. On another note, it's usually a good idea to also replace the water pump, 'while you're in there'.

More and more cars are going to belts now....more efficient and quieter....however this "timing belt in oil" (TBIO) that some makers are using does not look like the best idea ever!!!!

I prefer chains but nearly all the cars I have had have been belt . With correct maintenace schedules they are fine. They can fail when an owner ignores the age of the belt and plans maintenance purely on the miles the engine has done.

+1 for the water pump at the same time .

Ford Fusion, 10 years or 100K miles which ever come first. Some chains appear to have about the same life.

Mrs. Saff has a 2014 B class sport 1.5 CDI. Renault derived engine and hers is definitely a belt. We had it changed at 5 years old but specialist said its been amended to 10 years. I'm unsure at what mileage. It seems to be a good engine, nice and quiet for a diesel.

Personally, I'd get it replaced every 5 years, regardless....

Yes it’s 8 years old so if not done will get it sorted. Thanks all. Kevin

Kev - did the main dealer tell you the cam belt interval is 10 years or 120,000 miles. Thank you. Richard

Hi, the dealer phoned the Mercedes dealer that had always serviced the car and it was also confirmed by the garage that has always done my servicing. Kevin

Hi Kevin - thank you for your reply, very reassuring. Richard.

A minor point really but because cars have a gearbox, mileage does not necessarily equate to the same engine RPM / belt wear from car to car. A car that has spent many miles in the lower gears/higher engine RPMs will experience more belt wear compared to one spent most of its mileage at lower revs in the higher gears. So best to err on the safe side if in any doubt.
