i live in pakistan and i have bought a used C180 model 1998, imported from london, after three day when i tried to start in morning the ignation did not turned on, although the remot key locks and unlocks doors and opens boot,but the key dont even get a single turn in the barrel. we dont have any specilists of benz here i tried my best and spended lot of money to get it working. its alomost three months now and i am realy very disappoianted. can any one help me because i dont have any other car and i am facing a lot of trouble.

Hi there.. which part of Pakistan are you in? If you're in Karachi, i believe there is at least 1 mercedes dealer or specialist. When i was there a few years ago, i remember going to one place that had a few G Wagens that they were servicing. Quite a rare car in the best of places!

I assume that it must have worked when you first got the car right?
It sounds like the steering wheel lock is engaged - although I imagine you would have checked that? Insert the key & lightly move the steering wheel to the ledt & right, that should unlock it. Otherwise it sounds like it could be a problem with the ignition barrell itself if the key won't turn in it.
Out of interest did you import it yourself or did you buy it from someone locally?

try shaking the key - I had a similar problem with my W210 - the key would open the doors remotely but not turn in the ignition. I actually had to order a new key which cost around GBP46 but the repair man did say that sometimes if it is a loose connection inside you can help it by shaking a little - hope this helps!

If you cant get the key to turn to position 1 you need to remove the barrel by another means. If you remove the surrounding panels of the lock you will figure out what is required

I had the problem with my C180 and it needed a new ignition barrell.

If your key is the same as mine (below) you have an electric steering lock, check the fuses and make sure the car battery is charged up.
May be obivous, but is the car in gear?
I had this once a few weeks after I got it, I couldnt start it, and it was in 'D' If I remember correctly...

How many keys did you get with the car? Does it do the same thing with the second key.
If it is the electronic key as shown in one of the previous posts, then you should have an emergency electronic key as well. This looks like a flat bit of plastic with some numbers printed on it. This should also start the car, so its worth trying this to see if the fault lies with the barrel or the keys themselves.
