Hi there a mate of mine on about to spend 30k on a 2019 E Class. E300 diesel hybrid is what he's looking at.

He's sent me a link to one with is an "SE" . I went to look at Parkers to see what that is and there are about 10 trim levels listed (!?).

Last time I looked there was Elegance (not much kit) or Avantgarde (more kit). All mine have been Avantgardes IIRC.

So what's an SE? Is that the base model?

And what are the other main trime levels?

ETA Parkers list all these (ignoring the proper AMG's). I've no idea of the heirarchy.

What’s confusing about that? 😳

It's quite simple - there's SE, and AMG line. You can then add various packages which have different names depending on which line they apply to.

The SEs have leather as standard, the AMGs don't. A salesman once told me that's because it's easier to get an AMG line customer to upgrade than an SE customer.

The SEs tend to have smaller wheels, so a more comfortable ride, whereas the AMGs have more plastic skirts to impress ????? (complete as appropriate).

Other than that, they change the package content and option availability on a monthly basis, so it's almost impossible to tell what a car is without referring to several brochures and price lists.

Hope that clarifies things for you!

If he wants the ideal spec imo, he wants the premium plus spec with the option of the full length digital dash, SE or AMG line models both nice motors, the AMG line looks a tad more sporty if that's what he wants. :) 👍

Or perhaps just because some people prefer that look, and aren't bothered about impressing anyone 🤷‍♂️

I assume that's young in cheek. For E Classes it used to go Elegance/Avantgarde/AMG. With maybe a Sport somewhere in the mix. Now there are something like 10 x non-AMG's and at least 3 × actual AMG's.

Absolutely tongue in cheek, even the salespeople must struggle with determining the differences!
