hold it on the brakes, rev it, then drop the brakes?

I dont think so - but correct me if im wrong..

see the driveby vid thread as to why ;)

A guy in work use to do this in his 3 Litre Capri and do Do-Nuts  He keeps offerin to show me in mine  ha ha

I done this in my CL500 a few times, and it seemed to be fine after about 9 or 10 runs like this. I used to hold it until about 2500rpm and then floor the gas and let go of the brake at the same time and away we went!

I might see if I can dig up that video too for reference.

The problem is you are obviously stressing the box, but more importantly the oil is going to get very hot.

As a one off it's probably ok though. We neeeed a video though. :)

as my back tyres are totally sh66ed - no problem...

For the record:

A good friend of mine with a C240 estate needed a new gearbox after doing this for a while.

He ignored my advice to change the fluid in it, and something inside the box failed. New gearbox time.

How about these videos?

Yes, they are slightly tuned MB diesels with autotrans and stall speed adjusted to 2500 to 3000 rpm. Gearboxes are reinforced to withstand 800 Nm torque and 430 HP power though.

More details about one Diesel tuning project are here:

Ignore the lingo and enjoy the pictures.

The story really stars here.

A slight mod, out comes a 3 litre diesel 12v and in goes a 24v, also nice intercooler mod and bigger hair dryer. :D

Anyone speak Finnish. We need to know more.

Jimmy didn't you once say "I need more air" :)

Maff, I think you'd be doomed in a shoot out, we've had a post about this before and wasn't it about 380BHP from this thing.

You can do impressive burnouts if you can just find the balance point where the engine overcomes the brakes, you need just enough effort on the brake pedal to hold the front brakes but not the rears. Also helps if you turn off traction control if you have it.

I have done it a few times when I had the chip and 180bhp with standard tyres, not so easy now with only 150bhp and great big tyres.

275bhp and 255 section tyres............

Thanks Guy, I missed that, but I'm sure we had one some time ago with serious figures.

I think he's talking about his CL?

Being a Finn I can help you with the story. The new engine in the MB of Mauri is targeting for 500 HP - out of 3 litre diesel being a daily driver.

The secret is huge turbo and intercooler + modified pump with large elements to feed the beast. The exhaust manifold and the muffler are also slightly modified as the pictures in this thread show:

Out of sheer curiosity what would happen if you left it in neutral revved it hard and whacked it into "drive"

Thanks Markku

Now why am I not surprised at the broken differential. What is the permanent fix for that?

This isn't the same car as earlier, that had a 24v unit installed, what is the power output of that one.

There are number of SuperTurbos in Finland developing 400 HP+ like this one. The broken differential was replaced with another one, minor incidents do happen. 800 Nm torque is a killer if not handled properly.

After publishing the target figures of Mauri with 24v engine the other projects have been revised and a lot is happening in the garages during this winter. We will see the results in Dyno and track next summer, target is 10.x seconds@quartermile, not bad for an old smoking diesel.

These cars are daily drivers, having done ~300.000 miles before conversion and still doing 25.000 miles / year, not dedicated racers. The durability of stock MB diesel engine is a miracle, since most of the SuperTurbo engines are still unopened and internals unmodified.
