This afternoon I checked the tighteness of the new wheelbolts that I had fitted to go with my new spacers, only to discover that on 1 wheel, 3 of the five bolts could not be tightened or actually removed!

There is a fair amount of resistance so as far as I can tell they havent snapped, and the bolts continually turn, but never get tighter, or come off if I try to remove them.

They are eBay jobbles. I have dropped the car off with my indy who fingers crossed can look at it tomorrow as I need to be over the other side of the country Tuesday morning...

Any ideas what could have happened?

It does sound like they have broken. I've seen it once when spacers were fitted with standard length bolts. The car was fine for a day or so, but then you couldn't torque them up or get them out again.

Is that a long/grief job for a garage to remove them I take it?

Not had any great problems with wheel bolts, however, as an engineer it sounds like they have been stripped. this is where a bolt or nut is tightened to such an extent that the threads from either the nut/bolt are pulled from whatever is the weakest. This results in both items becoming as one. This results in what you have described, it/they will not tighten or slacken off. If the bolts have snapped, removing the other bolts should enable you to remove the wheel. if the other bolts are removed and the wheel cannot be removed I am afraid the latter looks favourite.

I'm guessing that for some unknown reason you were concerned about this, or why would you be checking them? Obviously the thread has stripped on either the bolts or the hub. Fingers crossed that it's the bolts. Not doubt, I hope, the indy will have them out in minutes.

As above, sounds like you've overtightened the bolts. A pair of long nose pliers can help to get them out but you don't want to rely on that hub anymore, regardless of where the damage is. Always use a torque wrench. Mine is set to 150Nm, as per the W215 manual.

As others have said, the thread has stripped. Bearing in mind the source, my money would be on the bolts.

Why? If the bolt thread is stripped and the thread in the wheel flange / hub is cleaned out it will be fine.

As they were ebay jobbies I simply wanted to check after a week or so that they were still tight and safe etc.

Its with the garage today who said they will try and take a look, fingers crossed its not terrible news.

Any garage will have them out in a jiffy. If it's only the bolts then it's no big deal.

Did they have the correct thread pitch and seat?

If it turns out to be the bolts, don't forget to tell your forum mates which ebay seller to avoid .

Garage just called to say all fixed. They had to order in a new bearing something or other and luckly MB had one in stock

So did they replace the the upright and bearing assembly? Ouch.
I guess the threads were fubared then.

I always maintain that spacers are a no go and buying wheel bolts from Ebay - well that's what you get.

I wonder what the end result at 80 mph on the high way would result in:fail

At the end of the day this is going to cost you big bucks - stripped threads on each hub - ouch:wallbash:
