The message will be sent. But will not show up in 'Sent Messages' unless you set in preferences.

Go to your user CP
Settings and Options > Edit Options.
Scroll down to Private Messaging
Make sure "Enable Private Messaging" is ticked
Scroll to the bottom and tick the box alongside " Save a copy of sent messages in my Sent Items folder by default"
Then go to the bottom of the page and click "Save changes"
Should be a copy in Sent items from then on.
