SL500 R230
Hi guys wanted to get a general opinion on car covers? i own a sl500 R230 which only gets driven on weekends but is parked outside in the residents secure car park, it always gets washed every week, but during the week it picks up tree resin and also rain water, plus the rear seal is starting to let some water into the boot. I was wondering if a car cover would be a good idea? What are your thoughts on this matter

Try a few searches, there have been a good number of similar threads.

Cheap covers flap around when the wind blows, and will eventually mark the paintwork.

A good quality fully-fitted one (specifically tailored for that model of car) will be OK - I had one on my R129 for a couple of years when it lived outside. But ... it cost around £300 IIRC.

Google 'Covercraft'.

I got a "taylor-made" cover for my dad's SL on his birthday last year from Specialised Covers (link). They were a perfect fit and were fully water-proof yet totally ventilated so there was no issue of moisture being trapped under the covers.

The issue is that a cover - tailored or not - must be put on a clean car.

If the car is not clean then the cover (whther soft or plastic material) will pick up the dirt off the car, then as the wind moves the cover (which it will on a tailored or non-tailored cover)and consequently create tiny scratches.

The only option is to clean the car each time before placing the cover on the car. Once gthe cover gets dirty it will be a pain to clean.

Solution, clean the car mroe regularly and use a good wax.

The OP did state that the car is only used at weekends, and is washed every week.

A heavyweight and fully fitted (tailored) cover should not move in the wind. The Covercraft one I bought was even specific to the door mirror type ... it was an exact fit.

I agree that covers are a pain to clean, if they get dirty.

thanks guys thats a lot of helpful info!!!:thumb:
