Hi Guys
I have a 1999 C200 can you recommend Castrol GTX Magnatec for my engine.

I know we have had a lot of threads on engine oil but I used to use this in my 190E as you know it is not cheap but the same as all you guys I don't go for cheap.

Thanks
Norman

It won't do any harm, but you'd probably get better lubrication and less degradation of the oil if you spent less by buying a retailer's own-brand fully synth (e.g. Halfords). Own brands are made by one of the major oil companies, so you've nothing to worry about.

Magnatec uses "synthetically engineered/-ing" on the label -- weasel words indeed, because its synthetic component is derived from reprocessing mineral oil.

Alternatively, the Kwik-Fit fixed-price deal at £40ish on Mobil 1 (proper fully synth) may be the most cost-effective option, although you will have difficulty persuading them to use anything but their own Unipart filter (included in the price). Finally, CostCo is perhaps the cheapest source of Mobil 1: £23.49 for a 4L tub; but, of course, you have to be a member or be able to ask a member to do a favour for you.

I use Mobil 1 in my MBs and Magnatec in my Capri 2.8i.

I would do exactly as Roger mentions in his post. To me, the worst fully synthetic is better that the best mineral.

To concur with the others above, Magnatec is overpriced oil that is marketed very well, nothing more.

For the money there's much better alternatives, Mobil 1 from Costco as Roger mentioned is one of the best.

Thanks Fellas

I will do as you suggest and go for Mobil 1

One again thanks for the advice

Norman

If you have a business, get yourself over to Costco and join up. Mobil 1 is £20 for 4 litres in there (net)

Or if in Costco, they have Chevron fully Syn @ £11 for 4 Ltrs.

You do not need a VAT number to join. Just take a phone bill with your home address and other proof with photo, pay the membership and your in.

Hi Guys

No business just lonely old me :p
