I have a 1993 Sl500 and was wandering if i removed the CAT converter from the exhaust would i fail my MOT. The reason i ask is that the 1990-1991 500sl had an extras 25hp due to it not having a CAT.
If i was to do this on a car which is 1-2 years newer and put the full exhaust from a 1990 model would i fail the emmisions reading? If so why can the 1990 model pass?

Because the cat wasn't required in 1990.

If you remove the Cat yours will probably fail as the new standard came in in '93.

It isn't so much the Cat causing the lower power output, more the over-rich mixture required to fire the Cat.

My 91 300TE was tested recently after having a full stainless exhaust system fitted with the cat removed. It would have passed the cat test if it had applied to my car. :bannana:

Suck it and see.

Ok thats fine. Date of manufacture is in fact 1992, september. So basically if i remove this i will still pass a MOT?

Go for it, if it fails the emmissions test for a 92 car the car needs tuning anyway. Good luck.
