Catalytic Converter troubles...possibly?

Good afternoon,

I have a Merc C Class W204 on a 10 plate CDI 200 with the 2143cc engine (the blue efficiency model).

I recently noticed a rattling coming from under the front of the car and have just today taken it to an exhaust specialist to check it out. They thought it might be the heat shield but upon further inspection it appears the exhaust system is all sealed and working ok. They think there is a part that has broken off (possibly from the catalytic converter honeycomb structure - their words) and is now residing one of the front exhaust pipe sections causing the rattling sound.

I understand that if it is the catalytic converter this will be very expensive but my main question is this: Will I be ok to keep driving with the rattle until Sep/Oct 21 when my MOT is? Will I do incrementally more damage if I leave it (performance seems unaffected) like this for the time being? Is this fairly common with this type of Merc?

Appreciate any thoughts and have a great sunny weekend! :)

You are doing more damage to the environment by driving without working cats that's for sure and as your car would not be road legal as you know it may have insurance implications.
