Hi All

I'm quite new to this forum, and am after some advice.

I purchased a C220CDI Sport (w202) about 6 months back. Great car!!

The temperature gauge has previously never been above 80. Recently I noticed the temperature rising above 80 when in mild traffic, and if in heavy traffic, the temperature goes slightly above 90.

Now, I’m not sure if this is normal, however I would like it to stay below 80!!. I have had the coolant replaced, and still get the same in traffic.

A couple of months back, I noticed some excessive smoke appear a few times when in traffic. This seemed to be coming from low on the driver side of the car (RHD). The smoke only appeared a few times, and has not appeared since. Not sure if this is linked ?

At about the same time as the smoke appearing, I would occasionally hear a whistling noise once I switched the car off after a long drive. Again this seemed to be coming from the same area as the smoke ?

Is there a unit in this area that may need replacing ?

I’m sure this is easy stuff for some of you MB geeks out there !!

Wouldn't worry too much about the temperature up to 100, worry above that.

Smoke and noise is the Air-Con unit working, quite normal mate.

Yes during this time of year, my 1980 123 gets to about 85 and more modern mercs ive had, including my clk always go up to 90-100 depending on whether im stood in traffic or on motorway.
You didnt own it last year, so probably cant compare.

Still a little uncertain, as the smoke and temp rise would happen without using the air con.

Are there any checks i can carry out to ensure if all is working well, or would it be more advisable to get it checked my a MB dealer (nearest is Brentford, West London?)

Cheers

If you are still unhappy/uncertain then get it checked out to see if it is normal.

Thermostat

I had low temp (less than 80) and wasn't happy, changed Themostat and normal temp of 87 now dispalyed ( there are 2 temp stats available 87c and 92c, mine's an 87c)
I towed the caravan first time last week and temp hovered around 90ish pulling hard, so I 'm not worried. The temp did vary a bit with load, it seems Mercs do that, although other cars I've had seem to top out at the stat temp and stay there. Probably as designed!

Happy motoring
Keith
E320Cdi estate 93K and rising

Many thanks guys. Have the car booked in at MB Brentord for Monday, so lets see what they come up with !!

The temperature sounds perfectly normal given that the ambient temperature has risen lately.

The smoke will be from the auxillary cabin heater which fires up until the engine is warm enough to provide real heat. I take it the smoke is from the front wing area.

i agree with diesel man my temp 90 ish with high ambient temp and 80 ish when on a run please note the fan is electric and has a electronic control unit located under the l/h/s wing and these can go faulty check with any mbz garage and you will find that they are on back order if it is over heating you will know about it and the dash lights up like a christmas tree lol

yep new fan control unit part no a 0255455932 on chassis release from mbz delivery 5 days only no longer
