Challenge: can anyone recognise this part?

Sounds a bit heavy to me.

The springs are about £60 each, the rest is labour...to remove a strut, then the spring and then rebuild and refit.

They said it would be 4 hours labour. The problem is, to take it somewhere else I'd need them to collect the car so not too many options!

Had a quote for £520 to replace both sides.

Could anyone comment as to whether that sounds about right?

Miles too much Springs £50 trade so say £60 retail + 3 hours labour max = £300 job at best.

Suppose depends where you are though that prices around Yorkshire and North Midlands

If it takes them two hours per side to undo 5 bolts, compress a spring, then rebuild in the opposite order, they won't be in business long.

Last McPherson struts I did took 15 minutes using only hand tools.

Mine were replaced by an Indie for £50 plus the springs. The springs on my car were not expensive. £520...is very expensive.

You've been caught in a tight spot and haven't got much option.

As a comparison, give the local MB dealer a ring as ask how much they would charge and the book time.
