Looks like my W209 has been sat on my drive for a bit too long (3 weeks) and is no suffering from a dead battery! I have managed to acquire a battery charger but am not sure exactly what the correct procedure to do this is (i.e. do I totally disconnect it, do it in situ etc )

Any advice much appreciated as I have heard a few things about doing it wrong can create other problems

If you do decide to put a battery pack onto your car make sure you switch the sidelights on before attemting to start it. A mechanic told me that failure to do this can damage a car's ECU.
If your recharging the battery completely for some time I always disconnect all leads or even take it off the vehicle prior to recharging.
If the battery has cell caps that undo you should open these to prevent a build up of pressure whilst recharging and ensure you recharge it in a well ventilated area away from ignition sources or naked flames.
If the battery is a sealed unit DO NOT attempt to open it, you will have to buy a new one, if your indoubt take the battery off the car and ask a qualified mechanic what type of battery you have.

My battery was a bit slack the other week so i just stuck charger in car set it on lowest setting and left it for 6 hours or so done the job and tell tale went green again.

Didnt disconnect anything.

You wont find many if any modern car batteries with the removal cell caps nowadays.

Not sure but if 209 is same chassis as 203 i would be very careful with removing the battery search on here or google sam problems.

I dont know if your car has this facility but on my SLK there is a purpose provided +live copper pin/probe on the LHS side of the engine bay, (viewed from the front), which lives inside a black plastic housing with a red flip off cover.

I attached the +live wire from the charger to this and the -neg charger wire to one of the McPhearson suspension nuts/bolts. THEN I plugged in the charger and turned it on.

BEFORE you remove the charger wires TURN OFF the charger.
