Hi gang,

Was just wondering if anyone had a recommendation for an inexpensive HPI service.

Basically to look into a vehicle - apparently recorded on HPI as a cat-C - but not recorded on V5 log book?

I'm wondering if the log book was not surrendered after it was paid out for and hence not updated? Car still has MOT certificate - not sure if that is valid or not if it was written off since (I don't know the date or any details of the 'cat-C' as yet)

It's only a cheap car so not a massive gamble either. Would be nice to know that there's no finance owing but as it's ~ 10 years old and of low value I'd be surprised.

Hopefully - worst case - apply for new logbook + VIC test, then MOT?

Any recommendations appreciated :)

Cheers Ray - I'll take a look on there in a bit :thumb:

Make sure they cover for log book loans.
Many still don't.

Or the CAT-C is recorded on the new logbook, which is held by a logbook loan company, and they are selling the car with an old logbook ;)

I'm a little cynical :p

Cheers guys.

Turns out that the V5 is the current and only one issued since last change of keeper so no worries there :) MOT is also still valid til April next year.

Car has original service book, key, valid MOT and V5/logbook as mentioned.

Mileage all checks out with VOSA/MOT history too. Has been HPI checked by me and is clear of any insurance markers for accident damage etc. V5 logbook is clean. No VIC marker either. I'll ask MB for a service history/recall/warranty printout when I'm next in there and a datacard for good measure.

For what it is that should all be okay. Turns out it was registered stolen and then recovered in 2009. Has been in use since and MOT'd a couple of times along with change of keeper and no marker on V5. Should be okay for what it is and the age/value of the car :)

Just needs a bit of fettling and some TLC to make a nice little car :thumb:

But see mycarcheck's condition no. 2 - 'We check each vehicle for outstanding finance on our database. We regularly receive data from some of the large car finance companies. However, not all car finance companies currently supply their records to us. Should you have any queries about the car finance data records we hold, please call us on 0844 482 1948'

May not include log book loans.

Correct. That wasn't my primary concern though - I have the latest V5 which was issued by the DVLA at the last change of keeper.

Other than what I have already done, what else could/would you do?

I was mainly interested in whether the vehicle had been recently written off for accident damage by an insurance company - this is not the case :)

I guess almost any privately owned car, HPI clear or not, could have a log book loan secured against it. At least this is a low-value old car so not of huge concern compared to the risk with some much more valuable motors.
