Chrome key upgrade

Ouch!!! Not worth it, thanks for the tip! :D

I bought a chrome key for 9 quid off ebay and found it was impossible. They are SUPPOSEDLY nonprogrammable, but technologically speaking i'm sure it is programmable. After all, it got programmed once, and unless the mechanism is supposedly one way (which is plausible) then it's surely possible, just MB have got the process very well protected.

It cost me £160 two years ago for a new key for my 2005 E270 CDi

What good reason? The price of a new key seems to go up and up each year!

Security of our vehicles! Most MB's cannot be stolen without the key. The security involved in this isn't cheap and unfortunately, as ever, is passed on to the consumer - us!

Quick question regarding upgrading from the black plastic key to the newer chrome type...

Is it a simple job to reprogram this key and, would the key shaft fit directly into the new chrome key? :)

MERCEDES 2 BUTTON CHROME REMOTE + UNCUT KEY on eBay (end time 04-Dec-10 15:24:20 GMT)

It's not a simple job. Some users have managed to buy a used key and transfer one of the chips from a working old key to the new one (this way it doesn't need to be re-programmed). However, I understand the success rate of this is low.

From another forum:

New Key Style for my C Class - Page 30 - MBWorld.org Forums

I have a chrome key for my W203, although I sourced mine from a US dealer about 3 years ago for what I recall being about $60 (yes really!). However, due to a difference in the radio frequencies used my car doesn't unlock with the chrome key using RF but only with infra-red. It does start the car so it's not too bad. Would be nice if it worked properly but, a. I don't want to sacrifice a working key and b. I don't have the necessary skill or equipment to do the work!

I remember seeing a post on here saying that it could be done, but from memory the thread was never finally updated with how.

I have not used this service or know the guy, just seen the add on e-bay.

^ That sounds iffy...

You send your orginal key and your address to post it back to a 'guy' on ebay...

:)

Maybe it's all fine, but not sure I would trust that.

...Most MB's cannot be stolen without the key...

Most? possibly - if so then this does not include my friend's SL55 which was driven away from outside his office... while he had both keys with him.

He has over 3000 positive feed back comments, he has listed a phone number, so ring him and give him an address where your car is not kept, such as a friend or relative, one key at a time, but if you are unsure don't do it!

I wasn't meaning to have a go sorry, just sounded a bit iffy...

:)

Like you say if give a different address etc.

This has been covered before, the keys can be swapped by swapping over the large square chip from your key to the chrome keys circuit board.
You need a specialised soldering process or lots of experience hand soldering to do it.
There was a link posted showing how on this or the other UK forum.
Obviously if it goes wrong, you need to then pay £200 to MB for a new one.
Colin.

I did say most, yes! That's really unfortunate for your friend - no idea how that happened unless his key had somehow been 'cloned'.

Apparently it is almost impossible to hotwire a 'modern' MB
