The offside rear handbrake does not work the same as near side. It was getting hardly any reading at the M.O.T centre.

I have looked at the caliper removed the pads & the pistons are working fine but when you move at slow speed & just push the handbrake pedal you can feel it just pulling up on 1 side.

Any thoughts guy's ?

The handbrake does not work through the caliper there is a set of shoes inside the disc itself.

More than likely this could be fixed with them being adjusted up if the shoes havent worn out

Sorry to be a pain, but dont really understand :o....When you say a set of shoes inside the disc, where actually do you mean?

Is the handbrake still a manual cable operation on your car? Could be needing tightened up?

Not sure tbh, its a footbrake system but dont know if it is a cable?

If you take the rear wheels off on the car and have a look you will see what Williow is saying.

the lump that sticks out of the disc where the wheel bolts go through inside there is a set of shoes used for the handbrake

Looks like your gonna have quite an expensive month going from your last couple of threads lol. You had the car long?

Tell me about it ....had the car about 5 months ......Hopefully can sort out the handbrake issue.

Well thats a bummer. I take it the car actually holds itself when the handbrake is actually applied ie it isnt pulling in one direction if you leave it parked on a hill. 2bh your not really going to be driving about using the handbrake to stop instead of the normal foot brakes so if it is holding the car on a hill etc then i wouldnt make too much of a fuss.

If you see one of my other posts i made this afternoon youll see that i havent had much luck with my c class coupe in the 4 or 5 months i have had it and even contemplated trading it in but got it sorted for free by the garage i got it from and seems to be ok for now. I used to have a 2002 rover 25 and that had less problems in the 2 years i owned it to the mercs multiple issues in 5 months lol.

Different model, but I assume the principles will be the same :)

You can adjust the parking brake shoes through one of the wheel bolts holes using a small flat bladed scredriver. Flick the adjuster to expand the shoes outwards until it just catches, then back off slightly.

If the shoes haven't worn out (unlikely usually) then it's a 10 minute job.

Thats useful thankyou :thumb:......I just had a look & thought that the caliper would have to be removed to get disc off, to then adjust the footbrake. I suppose if the shoes/ brakes are worn for the footbrake, then this is what you would have to do ?

Will have a look through the bolt holes to see if there is anything obvious that can be adjusted.

Hi there,

You have to adjust the parking brake with the disc fitted (as the shoes expand and act on the inner surface of the disc itself).

Obviously if the shoes are worn beyond their limit, then you'll need to remove the disc to replace them.

Try and adjust the shoes first - you only need a torch and a flat screwdriver. It's a bit tricky/fiddly the first time trying to see the adjuster (it'll be dirty and dusty as well), but by looking at the photo in my link you can see what it looks like and how it works - you need to flick the sprocket-looking adjuster to wind the shoes outwards. So turn the disc until the bolt hole lines up with it (using the torch to check), then use the small flat bladed screwdriver to adjust it.

Easy once you know how ;)
