CL600 tyre pressure sonsor

Yes, yes I know. I should know the answer to this question, but I don't. So I am seeking help here. Got a customers CL600 in and he wants the tyre pressure sensor warnings removed from the instrument cluster. He is a motor trader and wishes to sell the car on. I have Star but cannot for the life of me remove the program from the system. How the Hell do I do it? ( I would under normal circumstances renew the sender unit, but he does not want to pay the fee).

I think you need to recode the cluster to disable it. It can be done as members on the other forum have posted they had it turned off instead of spending money replacing the sensors.

He wants to disable a feature of the car? Does he/she have a good reason for this?

I know that they can and do play up but I would be pretty ticked off if I found that my car, which came with TPM, had been disabled.

Perhaps he wants to disable the "NO MALFUNCTION" too?

Sorry to sound like a grinch but having had the sedan S600 and knowing what does and will go wrong with them, I would hope that even small faults have the ability to make themselves known to the owner/driver rather than disabling it. An especially on the V12's - my thoughts would be "what else have you skimped on?" if he won't pay for a new sender unit.

A modern day version of snipping wires/removing the bulb in a warning light cluster?

This not directed at you Ian but rather the trader - when I was looking for my S600 and more recently for a Biturbo, it was not private sellers who were hiding things!

One trader had the gall to say, when I pointed out that the self-close did not work, "I did not say that it had it in the advert". Yes, but it was standard. "I did not say that it had in the advert". It is broken. "I did not say that it had in the advert".

I know what you are saying and with a normal customer I would leave it up to his discretion and wallet to sort it out. However, this car is for sale and 2 potential buyers have walked away from it, due to the sensor messages. I am piggy in the middle here. I try to do what customers ask. If it was my car then I would go to the expense of rectifying it. The car is worth it. As for hiding things, yes a good point and one I do no condone too. But at the end of the day, its what the customer wants.

i have a sensor gone and will be disabling mine too whilst my new wheels are on.

I think you are missing what I am saying - it is not the item which is a big deal (it is not) but rather what it suggests about the car/ownership/care, which is what I mentioned above - what else is being 'hidden'.

Ian's comments are spot on and given that two people have walked already, it is surely a case of "what else is going on here?".

Olly has seen the truely eye-watering invoices that an S600 can generate (my old car) as can the stablemate CL600 and for any 'lesser Merc' little things not working would probably not be an issue. Indeed, broken TPM's are not a dealbreaker.

But if a flagship coupe has electrical defects that are relatively cheap to fix and they are not fixed but hidden, it does not bode well for the car or a sale.

If I went to see a car with a broken TPM, I would not be too bothered and instead focus on the ABC, climate control, oil cooler (if a n/a V12) issue and rust - all being the £££££ problems on the V12's.

However, if I found that the seller had been hiding things via STAR and disabling them, then I would walk.

It is odd that they walked over a TPM sensor :dk: In the scheme of CL600 ownership, that is so far down the list of what they should be worried about that they have their priorities the wrong way round!

I would not be surprised if those very same people said "oh, a bit of an oil leak from the cooler, they all do that" or "probably just a sparkplug to replace" and buy one with those faults! :wallbash:
 
when my car went in for a service they didnt even mention the tpms sensor !

Setanta, appreciate what your saying, tis only the tpms sensor tho... nothing more.

some ppl will not know what the error is and how much it`ll cost to fix, so would rather walk away! if they dont see the error, its less likely to put them off.

Tyre pressure monitoring is considered a safety feature, and in my opinion disabling it may have legal ramifications in case of an accident caused by a tyre failure.

From an ethical point of view, you wouldn't really remove an air-bag or ABS warning light to mask a fault - as with tyre pressure monitoring, neither is a legal requirement to have, but since they are there you shouldn't do anything that will hinder the driver's ability to be informed about faults in safety-related systems.

TPMS is optional... airbag is not!
