Claying my car for the first time. Any advice?

Who realistically has time to do all this though. This is boarder line obsessive IMO, you will do all that then a bird will crap all over it or kids will kick a ball at it. I would rather just pay someone else to do it tbh.

Simzy. You are posting in a Detailing Section-everyone who posts in here actually cares about the finish of their cars. All hobbies are I guess obsessive to some extent. However, seeing as you seem to be rather slow at picking up Forum Etiquette, let me publicly remind you that we aim to have a friendly and helpful environment on here. Most of your posts are unhelpful at best and rude at worst. You have already had one ban and if it is your ambition to have to go back on the BMW forum permanently then that can be arranged. Either try to add something helpful or say nothing at all.

I'm starting to think that you have a problem with me. Every time I write something you pop up to comment back and threaten to ban me. I was seriously asking who has time to do things like this this simple question. What about the comment about steroids above, that is good forum etiquette is it. I've given advice to many on here so I think you just have a problem and want to ban me whatever I say.

I've learnt from bitter experience to ignore all of Simzy's comments because every one sounds like an attempt to aggravate.

As for clay barring, I gave it a go for the first time ever a couple of weeks ago on my 2-year old car. I used Bilt Hamber - Auto Clay Medium because it only needs water as a lubricant. I started on the bonnet and found it very easy - working on just small sections at a time with lots of sprayed water. When I'd finished the bonnet the clay was pretty much just as clean as when I started so I wondered what I must have done wrong. But feeling it proved I must have got it right because it was now like glass.

It wasn't until I did the bootlid that I saw any results on the clay. Not a great deal of marking, but at least there was some residue there. I put this down to more contaminants having been thrown onto the back of the car and not fully removed with any of my regular washing. This theory was enhanced as I did the rest of the car and noticed more residue on the clay bar the lower down I used it.

So now all the exterior paintwork on the car was super smooth, but barely different to look at compared to after a standard wash.

After completing the claying (a fairly easy if time consuming task) I washed and dried the car in readiness for hand polishing. I've always used AutoGlym Super Resin in the past and found that it produces excellent results but it has to be kept well clear of any plastic or rubber trim. It also produces a lot of white powder which can be tiresome to get rid of. So this time I tried PoorBoys - Black Hole because my car has Magnetite Black paintwork. It's great - it doesn't appear to mark rubber/plastic trim so no need for extra care near those items, and no white residue either. Very easy to apply and polish. Not having any swirl marks on my paintwork because of a life of careful 2-bucket washing means that I have no idea how well it stands up to its claim to remove them.

I finished of with my usual Collinite 476S wax.

Was it worth claying? Just about. I think the paintwork looks marginally better as a result, but maybe I'm kidding myself because I went to the trouble of doing it. And perhaps the super smooth surface will help to reject further contamination, I don't know. But if we ever get some nice weather again it's not a bad way to pass a few hours outside. :thumb:

Just done mine this morning (again).

Bought it in January and didn't do a lot to it but, after a person got my "chips away", (a small scratch on rear quarter) I was faced with loads of overspray as he insisted on doing it outside. I then decided to give it a good tidy up: Clayed it, Lime Primed it and just put two coats of Dodo Juice Diamond White on it, which has been topped up since.

However I thought, as summer's on it's way, I'll give it a treat this week, so ordered some of THIS to start with and give me a gloss, then some of THIS to protect it, and finally some of THIS to bring the shine out. All these have come recommended from various detailing sites, though it'll be the first time I'll have used Black Fire products.

The site linked to do a full kit of this stuff, though it's not cheap and as I had applicators and micro-fibres I decided to just get the stuff I needed.

The car's now in the garage awaiting it's shine which will hopefully be delivered tomorrow, though to be fair it still looks OK, just not slippery at the moment...

Have mine a decent going over for the first time this weekend after buying.. No issues but it's begging for a polish.. It's so flat I doubt it's ever been done in its life and the so called clean the dealers gave it was terrible

Ok guys you have sold me,I have bought a clay bar,I suspect my Tanzanite W221 has never had the clay bar treatment,I suppose it is the logical next step,I tried washing this car with shampoo with wax and it does not like it,I always have streaks and end up getting the polish out MER or Simoniz but I just bought some Demon Wash snow foam shampoo,it sure made a difference the car might not have looked like it had been snowing but there were plenty of suds on every panel,a quick clean of with the pressure washer and then I used a micro fibre cloth to dry,and it was streak free and so was all the glass those shampoos with wax meant I had to clean all the glass after as well,so next week it will be the clay bar treatment I hope one clay bar is enough,we will see.
