A little bit of advice please...

I've now had the CLK 220CDI (2009) since Aug and the MPG is struggling to get past 30, computer says I achieve about 26mpg on average. At this rate prehaps the CLK500 would have been a better choice!

I do short drives 10-15miles each way but compared to w203 220cdi we used to have its awful economy the w203 could easily manage 38mpg around town 50+ on run.

The car was serviced before delivery and I've had 2 treatments of millers still there not improvement. Is 26mpg the best i can hope for?

As you've probably guessed already, that doesn't sound right. I'll make a presumption that you know how to drive economically as you say you have achieved 40mpg in your old car. I get around 20mpg in my 5.5 Litre petrol on short runs, so you should be way above that. It could point to a problem but without any more information it would be hard to guess.

Have you definately removed the handbrake? :D

The handbrake? Doh that's where I'm going wrong!

Seriously thou would be interested in knowing what others get in the same vehicle. Its under MB warrranty so before I go back to them would be great to have some information.

I have a W208 CLK230 (petrol) and get 39mpg on motorway runs at an indicated 78mph.... Town stuff hovers at 30

I have a 200k petrol CLK. It averages 33 in general use, around 40 on long motorway run. The computer is not always accurate. It would be worth checking brim to brim to see if that agrees.

Hi guys, I'm new to the club but reckon you've deffo got a problem there! I have a 2006 CLK220CDi Auto doing a 20mile round trip to work & back

Oops, hit the send a bit quick there:) anyway I was about to say I average 39mpg on this journey & have checked it by brimming the tank. Computer is spot on. Hope you get it sorted!

I suspect he car is regenerating the DPF a lot so consuming fuel that way. Check the engine oil level and see if it's rising and smells strongly of diesel.

I have now booked the car in for next week. Dealer agrees something is not right!

I have the same car on a 06 and that is all the MPG I get.Had it back to the dealer who said all ok,took it to an indie for an injector check for fuel values, all ok.I have since had a remap which makes it a smoother car to drive, able to change up a gear at lower revs and gives another 2mpg but no where like my previous W203 manual, which was 38-50.Looking at other posts on here the earlier versions of the 220 CDI were a more economical engine and the 270 probably the best.I hope your dealer can find a problem with yours and you will let us know the results.
Good luck

I do hope they find something! I refuse to accept that I'm not going to get more MPG than I am now. This is my 4th Mercedes, 3rd with the same engine.
It going in on Thursday will report back with findings.

The car has just spent the day at the dealers and they tell me they have reset everything back to factory standard, cleaned and tested. On a run they have acheived 34mpg averaging 32pmh.
They say the car will never be the same as a W203 04 plate due to emissions as older cars had better MPG but higher emissions. True?

I asked them to check a few things:

Air Con is making a Hissing sound: MB say need regassing not under warranty despite car being less than 3 years old! :(

They also recomend drilling out the brakes to make them last till next service. What does this mean?

PS As you can probably guess I'm not very mechanical... now give me a computer and thats a different story!

Pleased you got it sorted, this is the mpg i get on a 15 ml run.Dosn't it make you think though, the comment about earlier engines giving better fuel consumption but greater emissions. Then the later engines are using more fuel, how can that be less emissions. If it is X amount per ltr than the more ltrs used mean more emissions. Is this more EU logic dreamt up by unelected fools.

The DPF does apparently make the 4 pot worse, didn't know it was that much worse.
My CLK270cdi shoots straight up to 50mpg+ on the motorway and is always above 35mpg round town unless in stationary traffic! On tank to tank tests i normally get just over 40mpg out of mine, but when i was commuting up the motorway i would always be getting over 50.

I think it is well known that the 270CDI is the best engine. My own car does not have a DPF but being a sport does have fat tyres, not sure if that makes a huge difference but overall consumption is very poor for a modern diesel.16mpg less than my old manual W203

When I got my 220CDi I looked at the official figures and apparently the 270CDi gets MORE MPG on the motorway than the 220CDi?

!

yes

each euro step= worse economey

to reduce nox the combustion temp is reduced. by lower compression ratio, & at low power EGR.

reduced combustion temp= lower mpg.

dpf when dirty, needs extra temp in the exhaust to flash off the carbon particles. temp is raised to greater than 650 -700 deg c. guess how?

retarding injetion point, or late injection which leads to less mpg!

incidentaly I get the great fig with the 320 by predominately using it on long trips.

Best i ever got from my 30mile commute down the M3 in a 270cdi.
On the tank to tank test the on board computer was about 5% optimistic.
