Just messing with the trip computer on way to work up the M1 this morning and was surprised by the MPG I'm getting.

Seems pretty good for a 12 year old V6 3.2 don't you think??

That is pretty good.

Did you reset it whilst on the M1?

Reason I ask is that the first few cold and urban miles can haves surprising effect on average consumption even over long distance. If you reset once cruising and up to temp, then the indicated average will be much better (after reset).

Can't find the pic at the mo but I saw 39.x a few times on 200+ mile trips. Wasn't purely driving for economy either, 70+ where possible.

The tyres i had on at the time, although having a fair bit of tread were of the rockhard budget ditch finder type, which probably helped the economy quite a bit, also I think I had the air conditioning switched off.

Could have easily seen 40+ on the computer but I find it impossible to drive these beasts at 55mph on the motorway for long distances with such smooth, easy power on tap.

Not a hope of getting anywhere near those figures in my CLS though however I drive it! Super sticky continental tyres about double the width of those on the CLK plus the extra weight and size/drag mean that even with a theoretically more efficient engine/box combination, it's a backward step in mpg - you can't defy the laws of physics. :)

I also find this, my C320 takes a good 5 miles on cold mornings to get into an indicated 20 mpg having started at around 11 mpg and if left only gets up to around 27mpg after the 18 mile drive to work however if I reset it after 5 miles it is usually reading 33 mpg at the end of the journey.

Do a tank to tank test and let us know how accurate the obc is. I personally find most mb are 10-15% optimistic but some are spot on.

Was the extra urban figure somewhere close to 40mpg on that motor?

Having calculated a number of brim to brim tankfulls I find the computer to be around 2% optimistic.

im actually disgusted that the 320 is doing so much more mpg compared to my 240 :( haha gettin average 24mpg. is that about right for them??

The 240 (a 2.6 litre) produces around 170hp Vs 218 hp for the 3.2 and considerably lower torque so it usually has to work harder than the 3.2 litre.

thanks for that :) made for despressing reading though haha i dont care i still love mine :) has anyone heard of getting them remapped? would it be a sucess to improve mpg??

The 240 is a lovely, smooth engine, just enjoy it!

I really do not think that re-mapping would produce a great deal on a normally aspirated engine. When was it last serviced and had new air filters (there are 2 on most V6 petrol engines of this era) and had the spark plugs changed? (all 12 of them!)

its a beautiful car iv loved every minute or driving it and iv only had it a week. i dont mind the mpg as its my sunny day weekend car just would be nice to get a bit better mpg. do you think a full service would help? i plan on changing the oil and filter in gearbox too

Do you have a service history and records for filter and plug changes?

Are you planning on changing the gearbox oil yourself?

There is a thread on here by Black55 (a very highly respected MB specialist and forum sponsor) that goes over this in detail and highlights the potential problems, ideally it should be done by someone with a Star computer as it is important to check the levels at the correct gearbox temperature. Also do not forget that the car does not come with a transmission (or engine!) dipstick :)

no ill be giving it to a mb dealer mechanic who lives down the road from me so he'll do that work for me. I want to give it everything this car needs to keep it pristine :) hope to get pics up soon. thanks for the advice again and sorry for jumping in on this thread :)

have a 2001 230k clk with 43000mils on clock only get 30mpg max and have a 2000 230k clk with 243000mils 38mpg both over 40 mile easy flat roads, why are they so different with mpg?

^ possibly a faulty oxygen/lambda sensor?

I got a 5mpg indicated gain once I had a duff sensor changed. Had no idea really that it was faulty otherwise, the car ran absolutely fine. Showed up on a STAR diagnosis.

had a good run in my 320 earlier, was pretty impressed with this. Was mainly motorway but abit of everything in-between.

I checked my 2001 clk320 coupe.....88k miles...did 178 miles yesterday, got 35.6mpg love this car, but bought a Range Rover as the CLK55 Amg I wanted ad been sold at the prestige car dealer, anyway the reason for change is someone shunted me damaging the rear bumper, insurance said it is a write off and paid me out, I bought it back and now I need to find a home, all it needs is a rear bumper, a passenger left an umbrella under the front seat and it got wedged so it may need a seat unit, interior is very good, no rust and it is metallic dark red......I only want £350 which is scrap value, car drives beautiful, new tyres and new brakes, last serviced a few thousand miles ago.
