My W209 (CLK320CDi Sport) needs new front discs and pads and new rear pads. I've never been overly impressed with the standard setup. Can anyone recommend a suitable upgrade that I should consider? I'm not looking for fancy looking things, just better braking performance.

Many thanks in advance.

What is it about the current brakes that you do not like?

Do you know what brand are currently fitted? MB OE have a good reputation and are good value. Also, when was the fluid last changed?

If it is pedal feel that you do not like then braided hoses can make quite a difference but be aware that some insurance companies see these (and upgraded brakes) as performance modifications and may increase your premium or, in some extreme cases, refuse cover.

As said above, generally the Mercedes disc and pads are quite good and are good value compared to other makes with less chance of poor fit and nasty squeals and squeaks

Thank you for your contributions. I only asked because I've found the standard ones just don't feel particularly reassuring, especially compared to my wife's Hyundai i10 which is very responsive, although they've always stopped me in time.

I certainly hadn't considered the potential insurance angle, so will stick to the real thing and get on with it!

I have always found Textar pads and discs give assured braking, and their eco pads produce much less dust than many others.

Often the best (cheapest) way to buy them is in axle sets from Germany or Denmark, Google is your friend here.

Always used MB brake parts. Never had any issues at all. Like above. Check your service records to see when the fluid was last changed. Also check the pistons are smooth to push in and move out with no sticking.

I use a piece of wood to stop the pistons popping out. Then inspect the seals and ensure no scratches or corrosion.

Make sure they are bled well and you should be good to go.

Ps. Check the rears too. They play an important part and keep the balance of the car. If they are sticking this will affect the performance of the brakes and feel of the car.

My W208 CLK 320 Sport has good brakes, I have never found them lacking, that is, once I had dumped the budget pads fitted by the previous owner.

Do you know where your existing pads came from?

Cheap pads are the most expensive pads you can buy and a lot of these drive in while you wait places buy the cheapest tat they can get their hands on
