So I just had the car plugged in because of a few problems, the reading was "pedal value sensor short circuit".
Is that the one on the pedal (complete unit) or one somewhere else such as the throttle body?

Unsure but sure it's a microswitch on the pedal but hopefully someone with more knowledge will put you / me right

The throttle is just a potentiometer, similar to a volume control on a radio.

If it was short circuit then it would be constantly on full throttle I would have thought?

Try just cleaning the connector where it plugs in if possible, maybe just disconnect then reconnect to clear any dirt deposits.

It will be either the throttle body or the throttle pedal.
Did it come up with any other codes? What are your symptons?

Only other code was "mass air, hot film" whatever that means, I changed the MAF a few weeks ago because I suspected the poor running/idle to be that but alas, the guy said it will have been stored in there because of when I changed it?
Symptoms, erratic and sometimes non responsive accellerator and rough idle often, occasionally cuts out when coming to a stop

Were the codes current or stored? What make MAF did you fit? as there is a lot of Chinese copies around.
If you are happy that the new MAF is ok and with the symptoms you are stating I would be looking at the throttle body being at fault in the first instance, as someone else has stated before replacing anything give the throttle body a good clean including the electrical connectors etc.

It was a Bosch MAF, the fault code was P20DD, the garage that plugged it in said replacing the pedal would likely fix it, but I did that today, and while it seems better, it's still not right, same hesitation and sometimes nothing when the accelerator is pressed, would this be something the ECU will have to compensate for, or should it have immediately solved it?

Pedal assembly change is plug and play (btw pedal position sensor is not potentiometer any more but double hall effect sensor).

The pickup seems better once it gets going but it still almost stalls when floored, it does a sort of 'double rev' like I've pressed the accellerator twice very quickly.
I don't really want to go get it plugged in again for the same price.
I've noticed a sort of suck noise when it hesitates, I'm not sure if that's just because it has K&N panel filters or if it could be some kind of vacuum problem?

Update, it's been left with Motor Aid in Basildon since yesterday, the fault codes are still there for MAF and TPS despite me replacing them, they also tested them and say they're in working order, and that they're now working on the wiring loom to see if it's that, and if not, the only remaining thing is the ECU :/

Wiring replaced and no different, now the ECU has to be sent out for repair, if it can be repaired, otherwise it's £1400 for a new one plus fitting, can't even begin to imagine how much all this will cost, it's getting sold as soon as I get it back, all this in a matter of a few months ownership, first and very last MB
