Not sure if this is connected but i just put a new battery in my '99 CLK 320 and now if i try a kickdown the revs rise as expected but the speed does not increase. i can hear the engine racing but the speed hardly moves as if its being limited. In fact, it displays all the symptoms that a slipping clutch would display in a manual box

Driving normally the gearbox seems fine. it's just when I try using kickdown.. Most odd ???

Thanks Kam.. I was beginning to suspect the MAS too after reading through other threads. Now I guess I need to locate it on my car (99 CLK 320) Any ideas how easy it is to test?

gear box

hi just done the same to my clk320 and had the same problem so i reset the gearbox and all the windows and its sound now maybe even better than before

The easiest way to test the MAS is to unplug it!

Without the MAS connected the Engine Control Unit (ECU) defaults to its built-in settings, but if the MAS is connected the ECU 'believes' the faulty information and your engine runs poorly. If your car runs OK without the MAS connected it's the MAS that's at fault.

Just took my MAS off and tried to clean it (not much you can clean). Then refiited and took the car for a drive. The car pulled out of the drive OK , went 500 yards and then lost pretty much all power.. I drove the next few miles at about 10mph with the engine occasionally finding some revs from somewhere and then losing them again but it never actually stalled.

When I found a safe place to stop I noticed the car smelt of burning from outside and also the slightly 'eggy' smell of a dying cat convertor (hopefully not!!) ,a passer by also mentioned that he thought he had seen orange sparks out of the back at one point when i was revving it.

Got back in and it seemed to drive a bit better on the way home. I stopped the engine, removed the plug to the MAS and started it again to see if it improved things. With the MAS unplugged the engine fan started going at max revs so I decided to cut my losses and come in and have a coffee instead!

Next stop is to get a new MAS I guess. Hopefully the overheating and smell was due to the failure of the MAS causing unburnt fuel or something??.

1 question - The MAS is the electrical unit just after the Air Filter outlet hose ??

Any other suggestions greatfully received.

if your first post is correct then i really would recomend you try re-setting your gearbox before you spend any money on anything else
just search "reset gearbox"

Thanks. Just been and done a reset. I will give it a drive in the morning. ;)

Thanks to all.
Bought a new MAS on EBAY, fitted it and I have the car I always thought it should be at last. This MAS must have been going when i got the car a year ago!! Kickdown is back.. engine is smooth again.. crisp acceleration, goes right to the red line etc etc Thanks again
