CLK55 won't start

Please Help

My 2001clk55 is running great but for some reason it decided not to start. I drove for about 30 minutes and then stopped to run into the shop, when I came out and turned the key nothing happened. The lights and the radio all work but the engine doesn't react when I turn the key.
I jumped started it off my Jeep using the contact in the engine bay, it fired easily and ran well on the run home, but it won't start. I tried to jump start using my Jeep connecting to the battery in the boot and nothing happens. The I connect the jeep to the connectors under the bonnet and it starts easily.

I'm well confused ---please help

I think this was changed about 3 yrs ago when the car wouldn't start when hot. Why does the car jump start off the terminal in the engine but not off the battery

Check the cable running under the car which runs from the battery to the starter motor. Also check for corroded battery terminals or a loose battery connection.

Could also be a poor earth connection.

thanks Rorf, I have read somewhere about a poor earth. The battery terminals are all good. I will need my friendly indy to put on the ramp and check the cables.

Battery earth connection....?

If it starts with the jumper connected to the engine compartment charging points, but not to the battery, then the electrickery isn't getting to the engine compartment from the battery. Remove the battery connectors, clean them and the terminal posts up, re-connect and tighten, and see if it's sorted. It probably will be.

If not, check for continuity between the positive charging point and the battery positive, and between the negative charging point and the battery earth terminal. If you get continuity, check resistance between the same pairs of terminals/points.
