Cls350cdi in palladium,C200k in tenorite,Slk320 in red.
Was told by a dealer today that if you let a cls run low on petrol it can trigger the engine management light to come on but will go out again 24hours after re-fuelling,is this true?

That sounds like utter rubbish to me, but I am no expert.

What, a crack dealer? What a load of tosh! Sorry to be a bit abrupt.:D

The check engine light can be triggered if the petrol cap is not secured properly after filling up, or the rubber seal on the petrol cap is defective. Hope this helps.

Don't know if its the same for the CLS , but if an A class petrol tank is run dry , the engine management light comes on .

The way to get it to go out is to start the car three or four times after you have re-fuelled it.

So i guess there may be some truth in it ?

Same as Howard, same thing can happen on the CL (W215), something to do with vacuum pressure. Hope this helps.

Why run a car so low its a risk you may not be able to reach a petrol station.

It can be galling to arrive at a station and find out the pumps are defective. I'd fill when it gets to 1/8th full

Soon as the light comes on , i'm in the petrol station.

V8's and running on fumes don't mix.

I think the dealer was only trying to be helpful/reassure(i never let my car fall below about 1.5 gallons)i suppose if i were to buy the car,run it low & the engine management light came on he wouldn't want me screaming down the phone/parking the car in his front room:eek:,hence the warning:D

The only thing running dry with a V8 is your wallet :D

:eek:to be fair,whilst test driving it(kickdown more than a couple of times)over about 6 miles it was reading 21.8mpg(figures suggest 24ish combined mpg),my clk320 v6 only averages 26mpg & isn't as much fun:D:D:D

Some of the stuff in this thread is pretty comical..

Anyway, yes if you run low you will drag the bottom of your tank as well as air into the engine and so the lamp will be triggered.

And yes after you fill up the light will eventually disappear when the ECU decides the engine has been running without issue for long enough. Not necessarily 24 hours.

The faults will then be relogated to the ECU's "stored faults" memory as opposed to "current faults".
