CLS owners...just curious??

Guys....many thanks for all the replies, it's much appreciated!.

Soooo,...staying on subject, I've read a lot of good stuff about the M113 engines...adjectives such as "Bombproof" and "Indestructible" have been banded about, as a result I never really considered the newer M273 engine in the 500, always thought the 55/56 plates would be the ones to go for. With this in mind and still talking about the 55(M113) has anyone experienced any major issues with the bolt ons (i'm aware that some fit uprated intercoolers etc) or standard fitted kit and if so, at what mileage are these issues likely to manifest themselves? Is it usual to see in a MB service book that major work has been carried out or is it simply a dealer stamp?, Also, while i'm on a roll, what do you think about the later M156 engines in the CLS 62?. Sorry for all the questions but as you will probably be aware there is a prime time in a cars life to buy used, usually just after known issues have appeared and been sorted and it's not always best to get hold of a reasonably low mileage one as these issues are yet to appear!! sounds picky i know but that's just me...been stung before on various makes/models so I want to get this one right if i can!

No brainer Amg over 500, the 500 if for Oaps ;0)

Nice cls 55 in designo blue for sale in the forum classifieds.

When I was looking to buy a CLS I initially wanted a 55 AMG. I test drove a few, and found one that I wanted. I was 27 years old at the time and the insurance quotes I was getting were ridiculous! The cheapest quote I got was just under £1600 per year, which I refuse to pay! I'm from Yorkshire! So if you are thinking of getting the 55 AMG I would inquire about insurance first.
Then I test drove a few 500's and found a 500, with the AMG factory styling pack, the newer 5.5 M273 engine, 2 years newer than the 55 AMG, £4k cheaper and in better condition. Insurance down to just under £500 per year! With 388hp it is still a quick car and on the public roads its hard to extract the extra hp from the 55 to be honest.
The 500 without the AMG tuning is very refined and so so smooth and quiet! Where as the 55 was a little stiffer and noisy, albeit good noise!

So I think you would be best to have a few test drives and decide what you prefer and what you could live with day to day. If looking at a 500 I would say look at the later 5.5 engined ones, such a noticeable difference in power and power delivery.
Also bear in mind that the running costs and price of parts for the AMG will be much higher. The only thing cheaper on the earlier 55's is the road tax.
Thanks for info IV. I'm 50+ so the insurance is not really the issue, i've been quoted £300 fully comp + protected NCD, like I say it's getting the engine right for me, not heard to much about the M273 whereas the M113 shines out as the best. problem is you seem to be limited to 2 production years so the 55s are like rocking horse poo whereas the same engined 500s are plentiful.

Not quite an OAP yet mate!! still get most of my kicks on 2 wheels, I have 2 classics, a Suzuki GSX 1400 and Honda CBRXX Super Blackbird.

Just seen that Sean's one is for sale in the classifieds.

There is no finer one in the UK I guarantee you , and if I had any spare cash at the mo I would be beating a path to his door

Get it bought ;)

I cannot believe that he's selling it. I think it's some sort of mistake - like he was in some sort of therapy and they said 'what's the worst thing that could happen to you?(Gt3 excepted)' And somehow it ended up here.
