CLS shooting brake video. I want one

Saw one of these in teddington the other day , looked pretty special ( wasn't an AMG mind )

Guess it was coming / going to the autocar offices

That would figure. Its just such a nice car. I really can see me getting one in a few years time. After the C class, all i could see is another C class estate as it really is so good, but this has got me thinking :D

You want a c63 estate , I hear there are some good finance deals available at the moment ;)

I dunno a little bird told me I heard the charges for wear and tear get a bit silly...

A 250cdi would do me fine. My only big fear is thats its got 7 speeds. Dads Sclass has 7g plus and its ok, but not the standard I expect.

Could try hold out for a manual but with a back issue an automatic really is what I need.

What makes you think the 7 speed would be an issue? I would think the 250 CDI would cover most peoples needs.

CLS and CLS SB not available with manual gearbox

This really is personal taste but I loathed the box in my E320 which was 7g. I had issues with a CLS grand edition loanded to me (7g again), a C320cdi I borrowed (7g) an E500 I used (7g) and my old mans S class is a 7g plus (its the best of them but it jolts a bit from 2 into 1).

I find the 5g really nice to drive with. I'd really need to see how the box in a 250cdi in a 7g + shooting brake gets on but of all the Mercedes other than a C class estate, its the one I could see myself driving in however many years.

7G + is by all accounts perfect, the gearbox it should have been from day 1.

I wonder if your Dad's S class is the 7G+ ..

Hmm. Are you not thinking of MCT in the AMG ones? They are good :D

I've been trying to find out, I do wonder as it seems pretty tardy at shifting gears and has a clunk from two into one. Took me, err, 2mins to unearth it.

Its a 61 reg, its split new and has all the recent 221 stuff like speed limit recongnition etc

Heres one just like it, it says in features transmission 7 speed, it could be either

Edit, found some factual info

S350cdi Blue tech has 7g plus. Dads is that, its a 7g plus. Its better, but not perfect. Trust me. You've been driven by me, I never once found foul with the box in your car. Within 30 secs I twigged the S was not the right shifting car it should have been, minor clunk but it would annoy me. He should have got an S600, filled up more and had a car with a real gearbox.

Is the 7G+ in the S class better in Sport mode?

I wonder how the CLS SB will depreciate ...

The CLS SB 63 in the Harris video is alluring ... much more so than the non AMG version I inspected at Brooklands last Sunday.

I don't even know what mode it was in:( It akin to the starship enterprise. It had a sports mode to lower it, but I felt no inclination, its comfort was too nice and it wouldn't make what is a huge car feel less huge. From 7g in other cars, the mode switch never fixed tranmssion flares or clunks. I'll try a few more 7g pluses before I condemn it totally. MB also have a habit of putting the wrong info on their website, so I may have posted the wrong thing as their website may mislead us. It seems too slow shifting and in this regard no better than a 7g. My drive of it would make me think its a good 7g, not a new box that 7g+ is essentially (its very upgraded) but if you cannot polish a turd...

Big engined big cars aren't good for retaining value, but I suspect over an E63 this will comand a premium on the used market. I could see you in one of these...

This car is hugely desirable.

My question is, though, if I load up an E63 with the luxury interior options, is there really that much difference apart from the E having 7 seats and more headroom for the passengers? The write up is very enticing but so much of the appeal is down to the 5.5l bi turbo engine and the LSD, which are already available on the E class AMG model.

Putting aside the practicallity versus looks, the biggest difference is in the height of the centre of gravity.
My experience of E class and CLS suggests that you will find something much closer to a sports car in the CLS and a lot less like a bus....
You can already see the roll transition as the CLS stops sliding and grips, with the 'tall' E class estate it is much more pronounced and takes a couple of oscilations to settle. But that depends if you are going to drive the car to sort of limits that Chris does:dk:

I have to say Mactech,I'd love to be able to drive like Chris Harris but I can't. The looks alone would get me to have my cheque book out, but in every day driving it would roll less and probably therefore be more comfortable.

The cabin is a lot nicer, and on a near £100k car, that matters.

me too .. in a few years :)

took a mate out on Thursday night in my CLS55 .. he's considering an SL55 .. to show him what an AMG can do. He was blown away, could not quite believe a CLS could handle that well on Sport II.

Ooh goody. Bagsie a ride.

definitely ..

you've not mentioned a ride in the CLS55 .. he's feeling quite dejected now :D
