CLS Tyre wear.

Hello,

My 2006 CLS seems to be eating through tyres and it has done for a few years now it's only on the rear (I know RWD it will be used more) but pretty much all my tyres are lasting anywhere from 3000-8000 miles I've had Michelin's and I've had cheap brands and none of it seems to make a difference they always wear out quickly. I have a set of cheapos on the fron and they've lasted nearly 2 years. Car is mostly being driven on the motorway and I got a wheel alignment a while back but it didn't solve the wear issue.

Any replies will be appreciated the car is costing an arm and a leg in tyres

Sounds normal to me for MB's, only other thing is your car probably has as much torque as one with a big V8 engine, so maybe your driving style is the cause?

Well for you next pair of tyres on the rear try Nexen they are hard wearing.

Take to some one who really knows car geometry.....not just someone with a rig and a book of factory specs....I'm sure there will be someone in the Merc world that someone will recommend. In the ALFA world it was the late great Peter Cambridge. Many ALFAs like the Brera and 159 handle great (for their weight) but eat tyres especially the inside of the fronts (too much toe out from the factory with non adjustable camber (until he used camber bolts). He used to scrap ALFA specs and subtly alter most of the factory settings on a proper 4 wheel alignment and tyre pressures.....and you would end up with a car that handled as well or sharper than factory.....but wore its tyres evenly across the tread on all four tyres and they lasted longer. I never used him but he was generous enough to make he findings public and I found a local shop to do it.....many would only do factory setting though.....worried about being sued I guess if it all went sideways (literally!!) but I found a place not to far to do the work.

Hi , I have a C207E400.The car came from the factory with Conti 5p fitted and the tyres broke up internally / externally on the rear with a very low mileage.

I switched to Goodyear Ass 5 and great improvement all round but I hit a pothole and blew the rear tyre.

Front tyres wear from both tyres companies was satisfactory.

Had to fit a cheap Chinese tyre to get me home , 255/30/19 tyres at the moment are near impossible to find from Goodyear !

The vast majority of wider rear wheel tyres tend to wear in the middle.

I have my car 4 wheel tracked often but finding a company that can do it correctly can be difficult.

Threadstarter should buy adjustable rear camber arms, these atermarket parts will tweak your car settings much greater than factory specs.
You can also try adjustable rear toe-in arms as well then you're fully adjustable.
Ebay has lots of cr@p for sale but also some good stuff.

I might give them a go next time just cautious of spending extra on tyres as I never see any extra miles on them compared to cheap tyres

Could be a good shout however all the other cars I've had I got/ am getting 15-30k out of tyres either front wheel drive or 4wd but I'm guessing rwd is always worse for wear anyway
