CLS55 AMG
Hi all.
I find my stock CLS55 exhaust note a bit tame. I'd ideally like it to sound a little throatier under heavier acceleration but with little or no change from standard at idle/low revs. A bit of research suggests a resonator delete could be a good first step before maybe trying other deletes &/or x pipes etc? Could someone please explain to a mechanical dunce like me what that a resonator delete physically entails? What goes in place of the resonator? Just a straight pipe? Can it easily be reversed if I don't like it? Is it just a section that can easily be taken out and replaced, or does it involve cutting and welding? TIA :)

Hi buddy, you've come to the right place for advice👍

I would considered a resonator delete which should help bring out the V8 rumble. See how you get on with that to start with? And yes, a 2.5" straight pipe will be welded in.

Avoid any potential x pipe configuration, will largely take away the AMG signature note.

ive just had my 500 done , resonator delete and large stainless back box.
purists would hate it but i love the low rumble from the v8.
from my experience the size of the back box dictates the level of noise
obviously im no expert
the system can be put back to standard if the pipes are flanged etc

Resonator delete & X-pipe mod. It is a tried and tested method on the 55, no change from stock when driving sedately, zero drone. Hit the loud pedal and it is sounds like the world is coming to an end! 😂

Imran at Torqueflow within MSL in Brum is the goto place for this mod (as with most other mod), you won't be disappointed!

Here's my CLS55 Exhaust mod video (it's from 4 years ago and my presenting isn't up there with my current videos but still:

That's a very helpful video thanks a lot for posting. I feel maybe just the resonator delete maybe be enough for what I want. Is there any difference in volume between a straight and x-pipe to replace the resonator? Or is it just a case of a different exhaust note between the two?

@Abb Now then !!! How are you me ole geezer? Long time no speak and hope you are keeping well.

Imran was involved in an accident a few months back and I don't think he will be back in action for a while yet. Someone else may well be keeping things ticking over at Torqueflow but I am not sure. Wishing him a speedy recovery

CLS55 has factory H pipe, just before the secondary CAT. I kept the AMG H pipe configuration on my E63, it's similar exhaust as E55, CLS55, they share the same floorpan chassic. I'm on the lookout for an C63 exhaust muffler for mine, smaller box will increase the volume and a slight change in exhaust note. Very hard to come by and expensive even for a used one. 20220406_165902.jpg20220415_151930.jpg

My own experience with the exhaust (albeit on the lesser 500, but still a V8) is that an X-pipe smooths the V8 pulses & gives an exotic European V8 tone, whereas no crossover (just two straight pipes in place of the resonator) gives a more traditional, throbby American muscle car V8 tone. I preferred the sound of no crossover, but it is all down to personal taste.

I have a set of c63 w204 back boxes for sale if interested pm me.

Could anyone recommend where to buy a x-pipe please?

You could have an exhaust specialist fabricate you a x-pipe piece of that's the route you want to go down. The M113k is such an amazing engine but as you say is so refined with its exhaust tone.

There are quite a few options to go with regarding this exhaust system.

Ive had straight pipes with no mufflers. I've had straight pipes with mufflers. I've had straight pipes with C63 mufflers. I've had stock system in place with gutted stock e55 mufflers.

My personal favourite with zero drone at any rpm but brings the 113k exhaust tone to life was the straight pipes in place of the resonator and c63 or CLS63 mufflers. You could have to your stock mufflers gutted, have the opened up, take the baffling out, not all, but a fair amount. Closed back up. With straight pipes in place of the resonator. Is rather a fair bit of work but cheaper than buying 63 mufflers.

Go with straight pipes in place of resonator first about £150 to £200. For this mod. Make sure it's stainless steel also. This is a starting point. If you still want more noise then go to work on replacing or gutting the stock mufflers. Look up some vids on internet to see which you prefer they will go you a fair idea of which you like best.

You still have straight pipes in place of the stock resonator correct?

I was looking in to having valves on mine. So how does it work with a switch. So when you want the real monster V8 sound you have the valves open, but when you want a more softer V8 tone you have them closed going straight through to the mufflers is that correct?

How much did this cost, do you mind sharing. Thanks

Sorry to hijack your thread OP, I'm just curious as to what the cost was of SLO3WLY system. 👍

hi yes thats exactly it but put an xpipe in place of the resonator. So I have a button which I stuck inside the car that has a coin battery inside. No wiring from there to the module in the boot. I liked the straight pipe noise etc but somethings was tiresome on the motorway and neighbours threated to damage the car when I started it at 5am once ahahahahaha.

I got it done from Profusion Customs in Colnbrook next to Heathrow. At the time they charged me £450 per valve. They instant in terms of open and closing speed.

The button they gave was the below and I got a custom made 3d gel sticker for it too. I stuck it with a velcro sticker for can take it off when I take it to a garage for works etc

I placed it next to the steering wheel for ease of access

Will try and make a video of it. Below is one I made but its with valves open

'True dual' in American parlance and sound brilliant without having to be loud. It's what I have and it's remarkable how many people tell me how much they like the sound. They like the sound it makes - not because it's LOUD.

Excellent, I used Profusion exhausts on a e61 545i estate. I had them install straight pipes for me and remove mufflers. It was ok for a while but like you say it gets a little wearing. The valve option is great 👍

If I remember correctly Raj, was the guy I delt with. Little industrial estate in around Heathrow.

Your 55k sounds a beast btw 😄👍

The cost wasn't to bad either and to have the opening closing at the press of a switch is spot on. Nice set up. 👍

Sorry it could be Jag, who I dealt with. Really know there stuff and was really helpful in listening to what sort of sound I was after. And great work also.
